Hi friends!
UPDATE: Thank you all so much for the donations that have been made to help me in my trip to Haiti this spring! I cannot express in words the appreciation I have for how generous you have all been. With your help, I have raised close to 80% of my total goal. At this time, I am still looking to raise around $400 to cover my final expenses.
MY TRIP:
This March I will be traveling to Port-au-Prince, Haiti with a group of other occupational therapists, occupational therapy students and a physical therapist to provide therapy services to children with special needs at a local orphanage. In Haiti, children with disabilities are often considered "worthless" because they are believed to be cursed or possessed. Many children with special needs are given up to orphanages and with a limited number of occupational therapists, services are often spread thin.
How I will help:
-Therapy services; My professor, classmates, other therapists and I will be providing therapy services to children with disabilities in an orphanage in Haiti. We will work on increasing range of motion, strength and sensory integration among other therapies. We will be building walkers, sliding boards, and other therapeutic tools out of PVC pipe, cardboard and other low-cost items.
-Providing supplies; For my trip, I will be only taking for myself what I can fit into a carry on bag. In turn, I will be packing my suitcase full of therapeutic tools, assessments, and other supplies to enhance the lives of the orphaned children.
-Education; The greatest gift to be given is education. We hope to bring new techniques to treat these children and also to spread awareness about disabilities.
How you can help:
-There are several ways you can help! One way would be to donate to my plumfund page so that I can go to Haiti to serve. Another way to help would be to donate supplies that we can take with us such as duct tape, cardboard, or giftcards to Lowe's/Menards. Lastly, if you have any advice, ideas, or techniques that you think would be beneficial to this trip, we would be more than happy to hear from you!
