Dearest Friends, and Family-

Between March and April, members of Team Safe Passages will be traveling to Lesvos for periods of 1-4 weeks. Lesvos has become a "hotspot" for refugees arriving to Europe. 5 nautical miles from the Turkish Coast, Lesvos received over 550,000 in 2015. NGO's are expecting the refugee arrivals will soon increase dramatically-about the time Team Safe Passage will be on the island. Whether it's $5 or $5000 your donation is precious, don't think you can't help, you can.

Latest Update

Team Safe Passage would like to take a moment to introduce another member of the group, Sheldon Rosenberg. Sheldon is returning to Greece for his second time since last year, when he spent close to a month with Starfish Foundation in Molyvos, Lesvos. Until a day ago, he had hoped to return to Lesvos. Now? Sheldon will be starting his trip in Athens-working the port of Piraeus with other returnees and a few first timers. The "job" won't be much different than Lesvos-in that there are a large group of individuals who are stuck. Where they are lacks the necessary facilities for the number of people. Volunteers are stepping in and feeding 5,000 people twice daily, as well as hot tea. There is clothing distribution, as well as dry goods distribution, kid activities, and lots of clean up. He doesn't know what is going to be needed the most, but he does know he'll need help. So, if you can donate, If you can share this with your friends-our Team thanks you. Every bit helps.

As March continues, we at Team Safe Passages are all preparing for our upcoming trip to Greece. With the first members already on their way, we wanted to take the time to introduce another amazing member of the Team- Nell Hergenrather is an art teacher, and artist and a mother to 3 growing girls in Sebastopol, Ca. “As I put my three girls to bed each night I am thankful for the warm house, good schools and the loving community that is my life, and I realize that all of this could be taken away in a moment. Any of us could become a “refugee”. We are not other, we are in this together.” Nell, and the rest of us at Team Safe Passages thank you for your support. Please feel free to share this post with your friends and family, and remember; no matter the size of your donation, it will make an impact and we appreciate you helping us to help others. Thank you.

We are happy that Kathryn has decided to join Team Safe Passages on its next trip to Lesvos, she leaves March 21 to help- Kathryn Hirt is a therapist and healer in the Bay area, and works with trauma, anxiety and major depression, grief, loss, and spiritual crises. Her belief in what's possible when we focus on love over fear, is the driving force behind her life, as well as behind her desire to volunteer with the refugees. Some of Kathryn's favorite things include animals and creatures of every possible kind, her new backyard yurt. And she says- " Just about anything that gets a rise out of someone to make them laugh at the utterly bizarre and incredible experience of living on a planet in a swirling universe we haven't a clue about in the end. That and giving. Generosity rocks my world. So do dogs." Welcome Kathryn :)

Meet another member of Team Safe Passages: Belle Sweeney owns Little Filaree Farm where she raises alpacas, miniature donkeys and bees. When she's not yodeling or milking bees, she works with the dying as a Hospice volunteer and with children who have come from trauma as an emergency foster parent . This will be her second trip to Lesvos as a relief worker. In December 2015, Belle spent time receiving arriving boats and working in camps with special attention to children and unaccompanied minors. Working to ease the suffering of refugees during this humanitarian crisis of has become an unexpected passion and focus in her life.

Safe Passages Team Member bio- My name is Chris Grabill. I’m a 33 year old building contractor, lifeguard, musician, and father, from Santa Rosa, California. About a week ago, I made the decision to book my ticket to Lesvos, Greece, to volunteer in refugee relief and recovery efforts on the island. I just can't sit and look at photos and articles on a screen anymore, and know that kids June's age are making this voyage in the Mediterranean.. Tens of thousands of young kids And not all of them are making it. Far from it. It's completely unacceptable to me, and none of us would stand for it if it were happening here. Look around at our closest family and friends and then imagine you grew up in Damascus or Aleppo, and you've lost nearly all of them in only two or three years time Then, after all that, you can't make it 8 miles across the Mediterranean to safety?! because of greedy smugglers, a lack of humanitarian aid forces, and shortsighted immigration policy?
