Although the Math teachers at South do like to encourage students to try their Math work without a calculator, it is inevitable that when dealing with certain concepts like percent, pi, etc., calculators certainly help students do their work more efficiently and check their answers for accuracy.
In addition, technology is always changing and quickly becomes outdated. Materials break, and need replacement. At times, current models are unavailable and replaced with other models. My students at South thought it would be great to create a fundraiser to purchase new, two-line calculators that would greatly improve their math experience. The newer calculators would allow students to view their entries and review what they’ve done to correct any errors. They would all have the same calculator to improve whole class instruction and partner work. The students are excited at the idea that they could, together with their community, help South Intermediate be even greater.
Our goal may seem high considering the calculators will be kept in our classrooms; but in order to use the better model, we need enough for every student since they will all need one at the same time during our Standardized Testing. The chosen calculator is very affordable, much more user friendly, and would make the 6th and 7th grade students aligned with the one the 8th grade students are currently using.
As a classroom teacher, I wanted to encourage my students to take an idea and work toward making it a reality. Help us reach our goal with a donation of any amount. It will be very much appreciated!
