A group of concerned citizens in the Conception Bay North area of Newfoundland are partnering with the Association for New Canadians to co-sponsor a Syrian refugee family for one year. The co-sponsors include Courtney and Terrance Howell of Grate’s Cove, David and Sherry Jenkins of Western Bay, Jesse and Trudy Bown of Carbonear, Rob and Deb Harley of Ontario & Grates Cove and Joy Matthews of Carbonear. Each member of the group is personally committed to assisting with the sponsorship and brings a unique connection with other parts of the community that help a Syrian family assimilate into our Community.
The Syrian family will likely be a 4-5 member family. They will live in Grates Cove, Newfoundland where co-sponsors Courtney and Terrence Howell will be their neighbors. They, along with the other co-sponsors and committed local community, will be available to help this family settle into their new surroundings and life in Canada. Depending on the age of the children in the family, they will attend our local elementary and/or high school. The family will take online English as a Second Language courses with the Association for New Canadians. A local doctor has also committed to help with translation as the family learns to speak English.
Courtney & Terrence Howell recently attended the Terroir Symposium in Toronto where they heard chef, writer, journalist, broadcaster Anissa Helou speak of her work in Syria, where after years of reporting, so many people that she has befriended and met no longer have their homes, their businesses or their communities. She spoke of how so much history, culture and tradition and, of course, lives are in danger of being lost and have already been lost
Helping a family to rebuild their lives in Grates Cove, Newfoundland, Canada is one way that we can contribute to helping a family resettle and to rebuild their lives and where we can share in each other’s traditions and learn how truly similar we human being are.
