On Monday, April 10th, Jonathan stepped out from his home to get his phone charger from his brother’s car….NOW he is paralyzed from the chest down.

As Jonathan was sitting in the car searching for the charger, a van pulled up across the street and a young man emerged and without reason, warning or provocation, 6-8 shots tore into the night’s silence. As the boom of a gunshots echoed Jonathan felt a sudden pain in his back, but when he tried to get out of his car and run, he couldn’t move his feet. He called his brother on his cell to come help and in that instant, Jonathan and his family’s life would be changed forever.

Jonathan is now paralyzed from the chest down. This was devastating news for an adventurous, physically active, avid Hawks fan, who also coached kids hockey. Jonathan’s love of school is only superseded by his love for his family and friends; His dreams and aspirations of going to college in the Fall to study broadcast communications have been shattered by a single bullet. Jonathan’s dream has been replaced, with daily treatments, appointments and ongoing intensive physical and occupational therapies to overcome the obstacles of being paralyzed.

While the news hit him and his family hard, Jonathan has blown us all away with the way he is handling his situation. His personality is shining through and he has responded with amazing positivity and hope.

The only thing we know for certain is that the next 24 months is critical for his recovery and Jonathan will be working very hard with physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists to achieve the best results in becoming as self sufficient and independent as possible under his new circumstances

The financial burden is going to be considerable combined with the need for continuing medical care, equipment, and changes to accommodate him at home—this hard-working family, having always supported themselves, now need your help.

Please find it in your heart to give to this very unfortunate situation. Helping financially will enable him to live as joyously as possible with the hand he has been dealt. His family hopes to keep some semblance of normalcy for Jonathan as he goes through all of this and Jonathan is striving to demonstrate to others all that can be done and accomplished, no matter what.

We are deeply grateful for any financial help that you can offer..

Please keep Jonathan and his family in your prayers.

Latest Update

This is goodbye for now as this campaign ends tomorrow so I wanted to get a last update out to the 502 people that donated to Jonathan's medical care here, there were so many that came directly to us for that. You have made a horrible situation bearable and alleviated a bit of stress off of our shoulders. I wish I could keep those that want updates posted, so if anyone has suggestions let me know because I'm open to options. We are eternally grateful for your kindness, generosity and prayers. Thank you so very much for the humanity that you've bestowed on us. One day Jonathan will do great things. Just know that you've all helped. I'll leave you with a final collage of Jonathan doing what he loves. May you all be blessed with God's peace and love in your lives. Please continue to keep Jonathan in your prayers God still needs to hear his name. Peace, love and happiness to you all, until later - THANK YOU!

Greetings! Today marks the day of one of the darkest days in our lives. I will do my mushy update some other time. Today is Jonathan's day. I'll let him tell his own story. "I got this tattoo as a daily reminder to push myself. It symbolizes the beginning of a new life, one of endless possibilities and opportunities. When I see this tattoo I remember that I have been to the lowest of lows, and now my mission is to reach heights I never thought I would be able to reach a year ago" - Jonathan Annicks ~Peace~

Greetings! On today's update - it took long enough but Jonathan got his driver's license!!! He had taken the written test and had his permit in March 2016. Several months after he was discharged from Schwab, thanks to your generous donations, we were able to purchase hand controls that he can use to drive. They attach to the gas and break pedals. He uses his thumb to accelerate and his palm to break. Thanks to our dear friend Esther, we were able to get in and out of the DMV and had a wonderful experience. Jonathan went out for his driving test and passed with flying colors! Another huge milestone that this incident didn't impede. You've been warned - the State of Illinois has allowed him on the roads, so buckle up! - LOL (he's actually a better driver now) 😊 Until tomorrow ~Peace~

Greetings! Today's update is about a wonderful opportunity that Jonathan had the privilege of being a part of. Jonathan was asked to participate in a training where he was asked to use an Ekso. It was phenomenal beyond words to see Jonathan "walk" with robitic legs. He transferred into the device and he gets strapped in. It straps his legs and torso in. The therapist then uses a battery operated hand held control to "tell" the Ekso to move. The therapist stands behind to guide the patient keep their balance as they walk forward. Jonathan went from a walker to crutches because he adapted so well. It took balance, patience, and concentration because his legs have a mind of their own and they spasm A LOT. We hope to be a part of more research and testing in the near future. That's it for today folks, until tomorrow ~Peace~

Greetings! On today's update let's talk about KAFO'S. They're braces that lock Jonathan's legs in place so that he's able to stand and use a walker or canes to move his body forward to emulate "walking". These braces in the pic, like the wheelchair were hard to get, because, let's say it together-"insurance is both a blessing and a curse". Long story but these were the 2nd set he was measured for. 1st set in cash was $22,500. Our wonderful Roxannie was able to get the insurance co to cover these - finally. The pics show the measuring, casting, delivery and PT in action. AGAIN, we're blessed for the wonderful people God puts in our path. Until tomorrow ~Peace~

Greetings! I wasn't kidding when I said that I had updates for you all. Today's update is on his wheelchair! Thanks to you wonderful, caring people, we were able to buy his first chair in cash so that he had it for graduation. You can relive that by google'ing Jonathan's graduation 2016. That chair was horrible, he kept falling out of it. Someone gave us a chair and we modified that chair with parts from the $3500 chair - ugh. Insurance is both a blessing and a curse but FINALLY after almost a year our wonderful medical asst. Roxannie was able to get the referral for the insurance co. to PAY for his new chair that actually fit him and we weren't scared that his chair would fall apart crossing the street - literally (it was THAT bad). The pics show the old chair and him in his NEW chair. He now has the confidence to travel somewhat more independently without the fear of breaking down. You were all there when we needed help and for that, we are eternally grateful. ~Peace~

Greetings to you all! It's been a while. Lots going on but one thing at a time. In February we had the pleasure of traveling up to beautiful Eagle River Wisconson for the Labatt Blue Ribbon Pond Hockey tournament. Both USA Hockey AND LaBatt were INCREDIBLE with the time, care and accommodations for Jonathan so that he had a seamless experience. It was very exciting to meet so many wonderful people along with trying out ice sleds. It was quite the family affair! It was an honor to have met Andy Yohe, 2 time Paralympic Gold Medalist and Michael Swanson. Their time and wisdom were so much appreciated. Every day, every person that we meet imparts a little piece of their wisdom, for that we are forever grateful! ~Peace~

Greetings! There will be several late updates in the weeks to come. There are many exciting things happening. Days are busy but because some of you that had initially donated in the beginning may not have seen the recent story that the Associated Press ran on Jonathan, I'd like to share a link to it :http://interactives.ap.org/2016/beyond-the-bullet/ I'm hoping that this works, and if not, please feel free to "Google" it. The interactive version is our favorite. Thank you so much to Sharon Cohen, Martha Irvine and Charles Arbogast for the time spent with our family. Throughout the process, they became like part of our extended family. ~Many Blessings to you all!~

If you have not heard of this amazing Payton graduate, and current DePaul student, Jonathon Annick, please take a minute and look into his story. It is humbling.

Hello! It's been a while since our last update. The first week at DePaul has been great! Classes are coming along, routines are being established, people are being met and everyone at the school has been great at helping Jonathan acclimate himself at DePaul. You may have seen a short piece that NBC Chicago did on Jonathan and the continued challenges that he faces. Fortunately he's young, strong and motivated! We continue to try to make things accessible at home in order for Jonathan to continue to gain his independence. We're still working on ramps or lifts to be installed at home for him. "One day at a time" continues to be our Mantra. Thank you as always for your kindness and generosity. More updates to follow, until then, blessings and well wishes to you all! ~Friends of Jonathan ~

GREETINGS TO YOU ALL! It's been a very long time since we've posted an update. It's been a busy yet slow moving few summer months. There have been a few fundraisers on Jonathan's behalf, more to come on those later. Outpatient therapy is in full swing. Jonathan has found time to get out of the house and spend time with friends this summer. He's been learning new life skills with his Mentor from Schwab Hospital. Life is different but the same in many ways, learning to live a new way of life is challenging yet rewarding when you finally "figure" things out for yourself as Jonathan has been doing. Next up on the road to independence is accessibility to the outside world. Prayers for us as we figure this out. We need help if anyone has thoughts on home modifications for our home that won't break the bank. Orientation at DePaul University was last Thursday and Friday. It was exhausting but exciting as Jonathan is now "officially" proud to be a BLUE DEMON! YAY! ~Blessings to you~

Would really love to meet this inspiring young man someday.

The long awaited day came today! - GRADUATION DAY! Congratulations to Jonathan on this auspicious day that's been 4 years in the making. New beginnings and maybe bittersweet emotions to be leaving behind life as he knew it, with people who have been like family to him. While 2 short months ago he was laying in the step down unit at Mt. Sinai hospital, not he or anyone knew what life would hold for him. With resilience, determination and a whole lot of heart, Jonathan looked past circumstances that would break many a person and made a decision to accept the cards that life dealt him with an amazing spirit, sense of humor and a whole lot of love. This young man is our Superman! Please continue to keep Jonathan in your prayers. God must continue to hear his name! #God is good ~Friends of Jonathan~
