Update 10/13/16: Cameron will be getting a new kidney on October 20th. A longtime friend will be donating her kidney to him. Cameron and his wife will be paying for his friends non-medical expenses (most importantly-loss of income for 6 weeks).
Cameron Whitley is a scholar, author, artist and activist. He is currently in the final stages of getting a PhD in sociology. Among other fabulous things, Cam is the co-editor of the award-winning book "Trans-Kin: A Guide for Family and Friends of Transgender People."
In 2015, Cameron received a very unexpected diagnosis of kidney failure likely due to a childhood illness. His diagnosis is critical and he is in urgent need of a kidney transplant. The amazing news is that he's been cleared to be a transplant recipient and has three potential matches! He is thankful to his community that rallied to find potential donors. Now begins the journey of turning "potential" into reality.
As you can imagine, the cost of this journey is significant. Cam does have insurance, yet the out of pocket expenses are staggering. Over the past year, Cam has had weekly (often biweekly) medical appointments and numerous advanced tests all while living-off of graduate student stipends and using student insurance. Cam is currently trying to finish his PhD. His wife recently finished her PhD and got a job, but Cam is still a student. Beyond paying Cameron's medical expenses, Cam and his wife are responsible for the expenses of potential donors (transportation, housing, initial testing, surgery copays and incidentals, 2 weeks of post-surgery aftercare, loss of income, etc.) which will likely top $25,000- that's if the first donor testing proves a match; approximately $8,000 more per potential donor if additional donors need to be tested at the University of Pennsylvania. That's all before Cam even leaves the hospital after having a transplant. Out of pocket expenses for initial in-home care and follow-up appointments will be a reality, and additional aftercare expenses are dependent upon the willingness of Cam's body to accept the kidney. In most cases, kidney recipients have appointments twice a week until medication and stabilization occurs which can take up to 6 months.
Cameron has been a force of nature in our community. It is our turn to offer him the power of our combined love and support. In the event that not all raised funds are needed, they will be donated to A Gift for Life, thereby helping another person find a living donor.
