Community is the new currency...in times of a great personal need many community contributions can truly make a difference to one overwhelming concern. This is why we created this fundraising site - here are a few words from our dear Lora:

Hello Friends and Family, I have always admired straight-talk, so it is with a wide-open heart that I share this with you.

Recently I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

There are so many mixed emotions that come roaring in with this information, and I am currently just riding the wave; taking each moment, each breath, each new piece of information one at a time.

I want you to know that this is a treatable cancer and there are really high survival rates for this type of cancer. I know deep in my heart that my health will be restored completely. But I do require treatment. Cancer has affected several loved ones, and so I’ve certainly thought about what I would do if I were diagnosed with cancer. What would I choose? Now I am faced with medical decisions that I never thought I would l have to make.

I have consented to have surgery to remove my thyroid and any other lymph nodes that the cancer may have metastasized to. I have more imaging and diagnostic testing in the next few weeks, followed by surgery in a month. Along with these medical procedures, I am also exploring other alternative treatments through nutrition and supplementation.

In addition to all the processing and logistics of dealing with cancer, there is also the financial burden. I am currently an uninsured person. My family and I had medical coverage at the beginning of the year, which we had to let lapse due to the rising costs. We live such a healthy lifestyle, that being diagnosed with cancer was the farthest thing from my mind. But cancer doesn’t discriminate. And so, here I am.

I have always encouraged my loved ones to ask for help when they need it. Now I am asking for help from you. This feels so vulnerable, and yet is so necessary in order to cover the cost of surgery and follow-up treatment.

If you are able to contribute, in any amount, my family and I would be so grateful.

In Love,

Lora

Latest Update

What a crazy journey this has been! It has been roughly two months since I was diagnosed with cancer, and just a month since I had surgery to have my thyroid removed. During that surgery, 29 of my lymph nodes were also removed, and 9 of those were found to be cancerous. There is a 25-30% chance that I may still have cancerous cells elsewhere, so the next part of treatment is called “radioactive iodine ablation”, which I will undergo the beginning of September. This is a really elegant way to target thyroid cells that may be cancerous and lurking somewhere that we can’t see on imaging. It also requires that I be quarantined because I’ll be radioactive… wild. Most importantly though, my heart has been blasted wiiiide OPEN !!! I’ve always told my children that learning doesn’t cease just because you “grow up”, and I am here to tell you that I have learned more about myself and the Beauty of Life over the past two months than I ever thought humanly possible. Thank you, Sweet Friends!

Lora, I am so touched by the courage with which you are traveling through this life event! Many blessings and thank you for inspiring me! Katie Keath

Lora's surgery on Thursday went well. They removed her thyroid and all of the nearby lymph nodes. Her vocal chords were stretched but have already healed well. She went home Friday early evening. Thank you for all of your positive energy and thoughts - it has truly been amazing and inspiring for her. She is feeling so much better everyday and is very optimistic!

Thursday is Lora's surgery - please take a moment sometime between 10:30 and Noon to imagine Lora being radiantly healthy and supported. Lora has a vision of angels above the surgical team administering deeply healing energy to her. If you'd like to do this in a group experience, we will be doing a healing meditation in our Mindful Restorative class that morning 10:45-11:45. Also, more than $10,000 of this plumfund will be going directly to what Lora will owe for this surgery. That combined with what she owes for all the diagnostic imaging, etc, so far, and other visits and treatments coming, as well, means that reaching our goal is important. If you are willing to share this plumfund link, we would be so grateful.

Lora has her surgery date - its Thursday, July 12th. Please see angels of love infusing so much healing energy through the surgeon's hands on this day. Lora needs help with a couple things: 1) A thorough house cleaning before her surgery. She is willing to pay but cant find anyone available this time of year. If you know of someone available on or before 7/12, please lmk 2) She would love to borrow a laptop during her recovery. She wont be able to easily hold her head up so a laptop will give her some more options. 3) I've put together a meal train to support Lora, Michael and their kids. Just a quick note to let you know that Lora is crying with gratitude for each of your contributions, so far. She is also elbows deep in paperwork with OHSU to get some financial consideration. This Plumfund amount (if we are able to raise this much) is to cover a significant amount of what her family will owe AFTER the financial discount is applied. Cancer is a very expensive disease and the timing on this for the Munn-Foster's lapse in insurance is unfortunate. The fortunate thing is the generosity of you all. Thank YOU!
