I created this account for my dear sister Melinda. Here is her story:

Melinda was recently diagnosed with Paget's disease and Stage 3 Breast Cancer. Paget's disease is a rare form of breast cancer. Only 1-4% of women who have breast cancer have Paget's disease. The cancer is advanced and aggressive. We are currently waiting for results on whether the cancer has spread to any of her organs and brain.

Beginning June 6, she will be undergoing 4-5 months of chemotherapy, a mastectomy (possibly double mastectomy) and 3-6 weeks of radiation everyday (Monday - Friday). This is a 6-12 month process. She is struggling emotionally with the fact that she will be losing her long beautiful hair and breast(s) and with the fact that the cancer could remain. Although her oncologist says her condition at this time is treatable, we are all worried for her well being and preparing for her fight.

Due to the nature of Melinda's job as a Flight Attendant, she will be unable to work during this time and will have no income. Nevada does not have a state disability program like California which means it can take up to 5-6 months before she is approved through SSD plus there is a 3 month mandatory waiting period before she receives benefits. Most of you know that since Melinda was let go from her long term job of 13+ years at Allegiant Air she has suffered emotionally and financially. She has lost so much over the past two years, including medical insurance coverage. Although she is receiving Medicaid at this time, the out-of-pocket costs for her treatment, care and moving costs from Seattle, WA where she is currently based for work with Skywest Airlines back to her home in Nevada for treatment are more than what our family can handle at this time.

Melinda is a loving daughter, sister and loyal friend. She has always worked for everything in her life and this was not an easy thing for her or my family to do, but we would appreciate any financial contributions and most importantly any prayers and well wishes to help Melinda in her battle against breast cancer. Let's get her back to feeling and looking her best and doing what she loves to do-- travel.

Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement and to those who have donated on or outside of this page. We are forever grateful and committed to paying it forward when the opportunity arises. Melinda's journey has just begun... please check back for updates.

Latest Update

Today Melinda accomplished another hurdle in her fight against breast cancer (she completed radiation everyday for 6wks!) It's been tough. Melinda is still going through herceptin IV treatments every 3wks till the end of the year along with heart scans, bloodwork etc., followed lastly with reconstructive surgery at the end of year. She will be ready to start work in the new year 2018. By then it will be about 2yrs that Melinda has gone without no income or disability benefits. This process has taken a toll on her emotionally, physically and financially but she can still put on a beautiful smile. Please continue to support and thank you all again for everything.

Melinda has been staying active in showing her support for the R.E.D Rose Program at Dignity Health's St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Southern Nevada. They have helped her tremendously by providing her with food and financial assistance. She was selected by R.E.D Rose to participate in a commercial promoting the program and hospital that aired during the holidays. Recently, she was selected to be interviewed by the Catholic Health Association for their monthly publication. These organizations have been touched by Melinda and her story. You can read the article here: https://www.chausa.org/publications/catholic-health-world/archives/issues/february-1-2017/flight-attendant's-medicaid-allows-for-her-breast-cancer-treatment As far as her treatment, Melinda will be starting radiation therapy shortly and is expected to have several reconstructive procedures this year. She is still not able to work is a filing an appeal with SS for benefits. She thanks you for your continued support.

Update on Melinda: Melinda has completed her chemotherapy. She just had her mastectomy and is now recovering at home. The surgery was a success! The surgeon told her the cancer is now gone. But she still has to take needed precautionary radiation treatments and attend follow up appointments every three weeks for one year. Next year Melinda will be undergoing reconstructive plastic surgery on her breast. Good news is that her hair is growing back fast. Melinda still has a long road ahead of her and thanks you all for your prayers donations, and well wishes. Unfortunately her social security disability benefits were denied and she still is unable to work. The only state help she is receiving is Medicaid and she continues to struggle financially to pay her monthly bills and expenses. It would be a great gift for Christmas if you could make a contribution or ask others to help. Please spread the word. God Bless.

Melinda is approaching her 4th chemotherapy session and has 2 more sessions to go with surgery to be scheduled in October. The side effects of the chemo has taken a physical toll on her but she has been strong & continues to fight & stay active as much as she can. The hair loss was extremely emotional for all of us. Some say its only hair & it will grow back but it certainly wasn't easy for her to see her hair fall out when eating breakfast or brushing her hair. Hair is very much a part of our identity as a woman. Because of your donations she has been blessed with several wigs & scarfs and she thanks you all for your help. She has been able to pay her car payment & purchase items she needs to get her through this difficult time. She has applied for SSI disability but was told her application could take up to 6 months to approve so she is very thankful for your assistance. She thanks all of you and those who have traveled to Nevada to visit her. She sends her love to you all.
