Nikki Berthiaume is a bubbly and beautiful 19-year old young lady. On May 30, 2015 she had planned to go to brunch with a group of friends to celebrate one of their birthdays. Plans changed quickly, however, on this bright, sunny day when an unexpected invite was made for a boat ride. Nikki and her friends found themselves boating, swimming, tanning and enjoying life near Spectacle Island in Boston. Nikki was in the water and swimming back towards the boat when she was critically injured by the boat’s propeller. Her right arm was severed, her left arm badly injured, her abdomen severely lacerated. She also suffered a laceration on her head as well as multiple areas across her body. Nikki has undergone three surgeries so far, unsure if future surgeries will be needed. She is now fighting for her recovery with a positive attitude and determination. The road ahead is a long one with much work to do both physically and emotionally. She continues to get excellent medical care, but will need continued medical care for the rest of her life. Nikki has won the fight for her life, but is now in need of funds to pay for her continuing medical care and treatment including physical rehabilitation and prostheses. Nikki remains in the hospital since May 30, 2015 and is without income to pay for her mounting expenses.

Please help Nikki continue in her recovery. All donations will help cover the cost of mounting medical expenses.

Donations can be made through this site. Checks can also be made out to Nicole Berthiaume Trust Fund and mailed directly to Hometown Bank c/o Nicole Berthiaume, 569 Southbridge Street, Auburn MA 01501

Latest Update

7/20/15 We are thankful to say that Nikki celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday! She continues to heal each day and is eager to get back active again. On Wednesday we will visit the Shriners Hospital in Springfield for a tour of their prosthetic facility. Then we will be deciding which prosthetic company Nikki will use to begin her future in prosthetics! Thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers and support!!

Keep fighting and keep smiling :-)

Some of you may have followed Nikki’s timeline on Care Pages but for those that haven't, here is an update on Nikki: She is home now and enjoying sleeping in her own bed again! Her right arm which was severed from about 2 inches below the shoulder is healing well. She still has a fair amount of phantom pain. Good news is her bicep and tricep muscles were able to trigger movement from a virtual prosthetic hand this week! The injury to her left arm that affected her Radial nerve leaving her with limits to her left hand seems to be showing slight improvement and we are told it could take several months to see bigger improvements. The injury across her abdomen and the wounds where they had to cut her thighs open because of infection now look clean and are healing well. The scars to her head, eye, back and knees are also healing nicely!
