Our friend and colleague Warren, executive director of the Welcome Project, suffered a stroke; he's now in rehab and working hard to join us again -- but he has many difficult challenges to deal with. He will need have some physical accommodations made at his house to allow him to return there and the medical expenses will exceed what is covered by his insurance.

Please NOTE: if you'd like to send a check it goes to Warren Medical Benefit Account, Rockland Trust, 399 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA 02144. 011304478 (routing number); 1416006086 (bank account number). And you can go into any Rockland Trust with the account information. Thank you

Latest Update

Dear all, today is the last day for our Warren Aid fundraising -- but of course Warren and his family still need our help. If you can help one more time, this is the time. Thank you all for your support. Peace and love, Team Warren

Happy hopeful new year friends. This Warren Aid site will close next week but Warren and his family still need our support. Warren's made important gains but he's got a long ways to go! Right now a lot of their funds are going to pay for special therapy to help Warren's arm recover - the Israeli therapy called Hand and Arm Tutor and then OT Assistants to help Warren use the technology. You've all been very generous but please help again now if you can. Thank you; peace and love from Warren's crew.

Warren, we're so excited to see all the progress you're making -- all our support as you continue to grow.

We've been making progress preparing the house for Warren's return later this month. Each time I visit Warren I see some gains, though he vacillates between acknowledging and celebrating his improvements and wondering how much he will continue to recover. That line that we kept hearing over the past six months: "insurance will stop providing therapy once you don't show gains," may have sunk in - but I know (and all of you know) that that's a bunch of hooey! Warren has and will continue to make strides in his recovery, be it at Spaulding or at home. In this countdown toward Warren's return, we urgently need two more sets of hands: - someone with a healthy back - to help move some bookshelves and desks this weekend so we can make room for a bed - someone with experience installing shelving, anytime in the next three weeks. (I will buy all the materials!). We need to install shelves in our closet because we don't have room for a dresser in the study which will now become a bedroom

I am set to bring food over to the house on Sunday afternoon around 5:00. If that's a time that we could move the desks and shelving, then I've got your strong back to help out! Let me know if this can work out (cj.chrisjames@gmail.com), and thanks.

from Marcy last night: Tonight, Warren entered Aeronaut Brewing Company literally surrounded by that yellow blanket that has been flowing his way for the past 5 months. Friends, family, and neighbors filled the room. There was a line of people waiting outside to come in. I walked down the line, thanking people for coming and apologizing for the lack of space. They smiled and said they were thrilled that so many people had come and didn't mind being outside. As the program began, I became overwhelmed as I looked out at the community in the room and tried to express how it felt to have someone receive so much love. When Warren finally spoke, you could hear a pin drop. He had the deep voice that had been temporarily lost before his cranium bone was restored. He was able to begin to express how much this community meant to him, and how much he had learned about what being loving and generous means out of this traumatic experience.

Unstitched and unhinged By Marcy Goldstein-Gelb — Friday Warren is making great strides in getting through the post surgery recovery. He is walking with more energy, though not as much as pre-surgery, yet. However he had the opportunity to use "the machine that goes ping", Warren's obscure reference to a Monty Python movie. The machine automated the walking function, which, once he was removed from the machine, enabled Warren to walk faster than ever before. At our request, the Occ Therapist also introduced Warren to Bioness, an electronic stimulation machine for his hand. With help from Bioness Warren was not only able to close his hand, which he had done before, but also open his hand, an important milestone.

from Marcy yesterday: Warren is still recovering from surgery, and still doesn't have his prior energy and body strength. But he'll get there with a bit more time. We have two clear next steps: this Wednesday, Warren will return to MGH to have his stitches removed. Hopefully, Warren has recovered from his stitch removal fright: After his surgery, while at MGH, a resident whipped of Warren's head bandage, apparently unaware of the stitches beneath the bandage, draggjng three stitches out with the bandage, wreaking havoc on Warren's body. The doctors and nurses swore on the founding doctor that Warren would receive an anesthetic to avoid pain. On February 4, Warren will return to Spaulding West Roxbury, for anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks. Whereas previously I would have dreaded the move to West Roxbury, not only is the therapy as good, but Warren has an opportunity to walk to meals.

from Warren's wife Marcy: Warren has returned to Spaulding Charlestown. He's still in recovery from surgery but with much less pain and fatigue. The view from his room is of the city and not the water - but as my Dad said, there's a lot more to recovery than the view. I'm looking forward to hearing the reaction of Warren's former PT and OT, when they see him hustling down the corridor with his cane! Unlike West Roxbury, however, they don't have nurse assistant's available to spot Warren as he walks to meals, so it's unclear whether he'll be able to do as much walking here as he did in West Roxbury. But one thing at a time. While nurse's aides may not be as accessible in Charlestown as they are in West Roxbury, the social worker is a different ball of wax. The minute I entered the room to visit Warren, there was Dorothy, making sure everything was OK.
