In 2013, we found out we were adding a beautiful baby girl to our family and our hearts were filled with happiness, love, and excitement; however, our celebration and excitement was rocked when just two months into my pregnancy I was diagnosed with breast cancer-and the battle to protect our baby and myself began.
At the time, I was teaching 5 classes and working part-time in an IT position on campus. I loved teaching and I love technology, but I started feeling a little under the weather when the semester started and I had to miss classes-which I had not done before. The college has a strong preference that instructors miss no more than one class per semester; so, when the diagnosis came I had to leave my teaching position to begin surgery and treatment straight away. Things were extremely complicated because I was pregnant which limited the treatment and number of surgeries I was able to undergo. After both a lumpectomy and re-excision while pregnant, we were still unable to get clear margins and had to hold off on treatment until our little one was born.
Thankfully, we welcomed our sweet little Abigail into the world in August and she is healthy, happy, and an amazing perfect little sister to our sweet little Emma.
We continued treatment the day I delivered Abby with more CT Scans, MRIs, and Mammograms trying to map the remaining masses. I have been out of work for a year and a half while we have been battling this disease and have spent my fair share of time in the hospital and emergency rooms and discovered just how much insurance doesn't cover for families battling this horrible illness. I am scheduled to have a mastectomy on July 21st followed by reconstruction. The first surgery will keep me out of commission for 6-8 weeks (no lifting even my babies). The second surgery is another 4-6 weeks with weekly injections. Essentially, another semester without an income and more bills piling up.
My wonderful husband has been working two jobs and as hard as he can, but he was just recently in a car accident that put us down to one car and up a bit more in expenses. We would love this whole thing to be over soon so we can get on with life and I can go back to work and we can finally get back on our feet. We have two little ones 11 months old and almost 3 who have been amazing little troopers through the whole thing, but who I am afraid are starting to feel the strain and certainly missing their daddy time. We would appreciate any and all help that you are willing and able to share with our family that would help with medical expenses and lost wages. We truly appreciate all of your love and support and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Thank you for your time and for reading about our journey. God Bless!
