Make Your Own!
It's that time of year again--we are beginning to make plans for our annual trip to Malawi to sponsor students for high school. We have begun getting progress reports for the students we sponsored this past year, and they are doing well. They and their families are certainly looking to us again for help with school fees for the coming year so that they can stay in school. We hope we can make it happen!
As Malawi is consistently ranked among the ten poorest countries in the world, the government cannot afford to provide secondary school education for free. So even "public" schools are fee-based. However, many families simply cannot afford to pay the fees, especially for multiple children, even though it can cost as little as $25 per year. Education is highly valued in Malawi, and kids are desperate to attend school. Kasey and I saw firsthand while living there how important it is--a high school certificate can be the leg up they need to keep themselves and their families out of poverty.
We were able to sponsor 21 students this past year with the money we raised, thanks to the generosity of many of our friends and family. Our goal is to keep these students funded through completion of secondary school. We have gotten word that many of the schools have raised their fees for this year, so our costs will be a little greater this time around. But with the worsening drought and subsequent food shortages across eastern Africa because of the El Niño weather pattern, our collective assistance in even more important now. (If you would like a detailed breakdown of how the money donated last year was spent per student, please let me know and I can email it to you--I don't have the option of attaching documents here.)
Thanks for helping us give back to the communities that welcomed us into their lives and families during our Peace Corps service!
Zikomo Kwambili!
