For centuries pilgrims have traveled various routes through Europe to Santiago, Spain. For her graduation gift Emma asked Dad to walk with her on the Camino Frances route of the Camino de Santiago Compostela, something Dad already wanted to do, as well as the AT. But the AT would require 5 months and the Camino about 5 weeks. Millions of people have done the Camino; nearly 200,000 last year. People of all ages and from all over the world walk to Santiago as a pilgrimage for all sorts of reasons, not all religious. The 500 miles for the Frances starts in St. Jean Pied de Port, Fr. and winds through more than 150 villages, up across the Pyrenees, Basque country toward Pamplona, Montes de Oca, the meseta, Montes de Leon, and Galicia. It is an ever changing route of history, geology, geography, and culture. Its popularity has increased since the movies "The Way" and "Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago." Emma says she is ready for the 31 stages the Camino Frances distance is traditionally divided. She has proven her legs on Colorado and Appalachian trails already. On the Camino walking is from 8 to as many as 25 miles a day, with rest days added as needed, the trip finishes at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela with a pilgrim mass, though many go on to Finisterra on the coast. Lodging is at special hostels for pilgrims at low cost, and many meals are communal. Travel is on foot with a light backpack.
