Food is at the center of many of our most meaningful relationships, whether that be our relationships with our own personal health and sustenance or our relationships with one another as we catch up over a shared meal. Since choosing to live a vegan lifestyle in 2012, I have grown increasingly interested in what I do and do not put in my body and where it comes from, but until relatively recently, my engagement was limited to the meat and dairy industries. Choosing plant-based foods over animal protein extends beyond simply reaching for a banana instead of a cheese stick for a snack — there is a story behind that banana as well.
I have found the most meaning in learning experiences that are active and hands-on, so that is how I am choosing to approach learning more about food. In March, I will be spending a week backpacking through Ecuador with a group from Operation Groundswell and engaging with local communities to learn about how the global food system affects indigenous peoples and how they are standing their ground.
Ecuador is an especially intriguing place to explore sustainable food production because it is the first country to legally call for food sovereignty, which is the right for all people to have access to healthy foods produced sustainably and ecologically. Throughout the nine days that I am there, I will be exploring permaculture, agroecology, food forests, urban agriculture, food sovereignty, and community resistance and resilience in addition to Ecuador’s language and culture. I will be covering all costs for the trip, so the money collected through this page will go toward supporting the NGOs and communities that will lead the group through this program. To learn more about the program, issues and communities involved, please visit Operation Groundswell’s website (https://operationgroundswell.com/program-packages/ecuador-food-revolutions-march/). Thank you for your interest and support, and I’m looking forward to keeping everyone updated on what I learn throughout the program!
