Having worked as a health aide at the VA Medical Center for four years, Dionne has grown attached to many of the veterans there. She always takes the time to sit with them and listen to their stories. And she’s learned that many of them are unhoused.

As Dionne says “You talk to them and hear their stories and you feel bad. Somebody gotta help. I want to be a part of that.” Her vision is to provide a home for these veterans where she will cook for them, bring them to appointments, and provide them with a sense of community.

Now her dream is coming true- the VA has gifted her with a house, located near Lehigh Ave and 23rd St, that she can use once she fixes it up. But the house needs a lot of work. We’re raising money to get the roof replaced, the interior cleaned out, and the electrical wiring fixed. The house also needs a washer, dryer, and refrigerator.

At a time like this, when thousands of people in Philly are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless and the city continues to do nothing, housing efforts like Dionne’s are becoming increasingly vital. Please help Dionne reach her goal!

Latest Update

Dionne's home is so close to being done! All that's left is fixing the electrical wiring which will cost about $1,000. Could you send a little bit more Dionne's way? Or do you know of any nonprofits or other organizations who could assist with this last step? Dionne is so grateful for all of your help so far <3

Hey all, so much progress has happened on the house! Attached is a screen capture from a walk through video Dionne sent me. The contractor has finished the roof, replaced the siding at the back of the house, and has almost finished clearing out the entire interior. Next he has to fix the plumbing, replace several windows and start the electrical wiring. Based on his timeline, Dionne thinks they can start moving folks in as soon as November! However, she's trying to fund this work herself, and the VA has only been giving her two days of work per week. Could you contribute a little more to help finish this project and get people housed before winter?

Hey all, thank you SO much to everyone who has sent funds so far! Dionne told me a contractor started working on the roof last week! However, from seeing photos of the inside of the house, it's clear that a lot of work still needs to go into making this a safe and comfortable space for unhoused folks. The contractor is letting Dionne pay in installments, but the overall cost is still beyond her current means. Could you share this fundraiser with others in your network?
