As if 2020 hasn’t already been a year full of heartbreak and tragedy, record-setting wildfires are devasting the Western half of the United States, with more than 4.6 million acres set ablaze since mid-August. There are a multitude of fires burning in Oregon, California, Washington, Colorado and Idaho, with fire activity also being seen in Arizona, Montana, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming. At least 35 people have lost their lives throughout the Western U.S., with tens of thousands of people currently displaced due to mandatory evacuations.
Oregon and California have been two of the hardest hit states. In Oregon, more than 1 million acres have burned, a state record. Ten people have lost their lives in Oregon due to the wildfires and currently 1 in 10 Oregonians are under evacuation warnings or orders. In California, 3.4 million acres have burned, 25 people have lost their lives, and 38,000 people are under evacuation. California’s August Complex Fire alone has engulfed 755,600 acres, making it the largest wildfire in state history. Of course, these numbers are in a constant state of flux as new information comes to light. The air quality in the affected and surrounding areas continues to be abysmal and haze from the wildfires has been reported to have reached as far east as New York and Washington D.C.
We are still gathering details on how deeply our co-workers in the area of the fires have been affected. Thankfully, no loss of life has been seen in our FNF family as a result of these wildfires, however, many have been affected. In Oregon, 2 of our co-workers have lost their homes. In California there has been no employee property losses to date, but many have been temporarily displaced due to evacuations. We hope that no other FNF family members are affected, but we also know that the situation can change quickly anytime we are dealing with wildfires.
