Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to read about our project :)
We are currently in the process of building a small skatepark for the local children of Langsod village. Our intention is to give them something fun and physical to do and steer them away from a life of drugs and boredom. This park is being created by 100% donation, and we need your help to finish it.
Here is our back story....
Last year, on the island of Lanta Noi in southern Thailand, a weekly non-profit gathering was formed. The intention was to occupy youths time with constructive activities and veer them away from drugs. It has been an opportunity for local kids to come and read donated books, to practice English, to draw, and to play games together. It was hosted by volunteers, who would read to the children in English and in Thai, and it soon was coined "Kids Book Club" of Langsod Village (in Lanta Noi).
More volunteers pitched in and more children showed up, but it soon became apparent that the older and teenage kids were a bit bored playing games with the younger ones- they needed something more exciting to catch their attention.
The idea of a skatepark was met with much enthusiasm. Most young people in the village had never tried skating, as many pathways and roads were just dirt and there was never much of an opportunity. When the local community school graciously offered up a section of land for building, the dream started to look like it could become a reality.
Fortunate for Kids Book Club, two very generous investors volunteered some time with the children and also observed the need for an activity aimed towards the older kids. After all- the main purpose of Book Club was to keep kids constructive and away from drugs, and the older ones were the highest risk.
The investors donated a large sum of money that was able to get the project off the ground and a construction team assembled for the job. With the help of local and visiting skateboarders, we designed a park that will be fun and challenging, yet accessible to riders of all levels.
We have a local team of talented builders on site everyday and we are very excited about the progress... but we need your help.
The designs are modest, but are still coming in a little over budget. We're also looking to buy a supply of skateboards and protective gear, which wasn't included in the original projected budget.
We are in conversation with skateshops and manufacturers who are in support of our project, so the funds that are donated will be spent in the smartest and most efficient ways.
Our future plans include networking with local tourism channels, allowing us to help connect traveling skateboarders and local kids, in a voluntary teaching format.
Along with free time use of the park throughout the week, the kids will have the opportunity to learn new tricks and skills from volunteer riders during the 2 hour weekly Kids Book Club meet.
It'll be an exciting and fulfilling cultural experience for everyone involved, and creates a great learning platform for language, culture, and skateboarding skills alike.
Please help us to make this dream a reality. Even the smallest contribution is greatly appreciated :)
No one involved in Kids Book Club takes a salary, it is ran solely by volunteer help; 100% of the funds raised goes straight into benefiting the kids.
NOTE: If anyone feels they have a source for equipment that they believe may be able to offer the best value, as sponsorship, or as donation, we would be very thankful for you to get in contact with us.
