Make Your Own!
Started by: Briar Elliott
Hello! My name is Briar, and I am a schoolteacher embarking on a 40 day backpacking trip through northern India! This high altitude education excursion is a volunteering experience where I will be trekking up the Himalayan Mountains to a school in a very isolated area where students are not able to get education from the government education system.
I am traveling though a company called Operation Groundswell. Operation Groundswell is a non-profit volunteer-travel experience unlike any other. Founded in 2006, OG is dedicated to taking young adults outside of their comfort zones and into the wider world to explore and learn. Their programs expose participants to the harsh realities and rich knowledge base found throughout everyday life in the developing world. In showing the ground-level perspective, Operation Groundswell ultimately hopes to foster cross-cultural dialogue through engagement between participants and partner communities.
From July 14th–August 22nd 2018, I will be volunteering in small communities across Northern India. I will be paying for my own trip, but also have to fundraise $750 which goes towards carbon offsetting (10%), in-country projects (82%), and administration (8%).
As a new and enthusiastic teacher, I feel this experience will impact me, not only personally, but also in my teaching. I hope to inspire my students with my experiences in order to become more open-minded and understand the world with more perspective. I am extremely excited for this opportunity and to see how education is affecting people around the planet. I greatly appreciate any support you can give to this campaign in order for me to continue to make a difference in student’s who live in Canada and around the world.
