On October 19, 2016 Kay Anichini, mother of Marco and Maya Anichini, was in a serious car accident, where she sustained life-threatening injuries. She was transported to the Bassett Hospital ICU in critically unstable condition in which she remained for several weeks. Major surgery was done to stabilize severe spinal fractures. During this time she battled serious infections, was on a ventilator and a feeding tube.

Kay was moved to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center in Schenectady, NY, where she had intensive speech, occupational and physical therapy. She made significant progress in her 5 weeks there, including: regaining her ability to speak, removal of her tracheotomy and feeding tube, learning to use an electric wheelchair and regaining physical strength. She was then transferred to Sitrin Health Care Center in New Hartford, NY for additional rehabilitation. In February, Kay underwent another major surgery to fuse her cervical spine. She was then transferred to Heritage Health Care Center in Utica, NY for rehabilitation and is now continuing her recovery closer to home at FOCUS Otsego.

The accident left her a paraplegic. Currently a discharge plan is being developed so she can return to her home. Major renovations are required to facilitate her ability to live and function as independently as possible.

The goal of this fund is to cover renovations, purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle, medical expenses and equipment not covered by insurance and excess personal expenses incurred as a result of the accident.

Latest Update

Having recently spent some more time in the hospital, Kay made it back home just in time to bring in the New Year. We are so grateful for all of the support we received this last year. Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2018!

Dear Family and Friends, Since our last update, Kay has made a very difficult transition home. Due to poor discharge planning on part of the rehabilitation facility, the last 2-1/2 months have been a struggle to get equipment and services in place. Despite these hardships, our community has been there help. For her birthday, with some ingenuity and the assistance of the Manikas family, we were able to bring Kay on her first social outing and car ride since the accident last October. Continuing a tradition, Mike and I surprised her by going to the Great American Irish Festival in Frankfort, NY. Thank you for the continued support of our family during this very difficult time - it means so much to us. The Anichini Family

We wanted to send a quick update. The most important news of all is, after 8 long months, Kay is finally coming home! She has continued to make consistent rehabilitative progress at FOCUS Otsego, with occasional minor setbacks. Construction is underway on a bedroom, which will allow her to return home this week. There is still much work to be done, as she is returning home to only a bedroom. In the coming months, we hope to build an accessible bathroom. Your kindness and generosity continues to amaze us. The support of this community, our friends, and family gives us hope for further progress and positive change. The Anichini Family

We want to thank everyone who has supported our family in so many ways over the course of the last 6 months. Your well-wishes, gifts, cards, food and donations have kept us going through a difficult time. To those of you who donated to the GoFundMe, we are so very touched by your generosity. These funds helped us cover essential expenses that we incurred in the first months after the accident. This new PlumFund, so kindly set up for us by Pamela Baxter and Melissa Manikas, will help with major expenses incurred as Kay is discharged home.
