Hello friends,
Since the Ukraine war began in February 2022, I have been working with other attorneys in Miami to secure visas and shelter, address immediate medical needs, and intercept human trafficking occurring with refugees in Miami.
As Ukrainian men have been asked to stay behind, I have been working with women and their children who have fled the war-torn country. And while not wanting to get personally involved, one recent case was too compelling as it involved a girl the same age as our twins.
Since the Ukraine war began, Hannah (the mother), and her daughters have lived in a bomb shelter. And while Hannah has two daughters, she had to separate from her older daughter and only bring her younger daughter (Angelina), when she came to the US in June, 2022.
Upon arriving in the US, Hannah and Angelina were subjected to even further atrocities; and to date have lost a husband/father, their home, all of their possessions, and all sense of safety and security.
As Angelina is the same age as our twins Isabella and Valentina, I am indebted to our school, St. Mark's Episcopal, who offered an angel scholarship to Angelina for the 2022-2023 academic school year. Once that occurred, Camilo and I leased an apartment within walking distance from the school for Hannah and Angelina.
On August 16th Angelina returned to an actual school room with other students for the first time since the war began. With her daughter now in school full time, Hannah can begin to put the pieces of her life back together.
While Hannah is willing to work and has skills that will eventually translate to gainful employment here in the US, until that time, and even after Hannah finds work, her expenses and getting back on her feet again will amount to much more than she will be able to initially generate. Meanwhile, she is here in a foreign country with no means of support.
I have been humbled by the outpouring of support and interest that so many of you have expressed insofar as helping, and thank those of you who have already met Hannah and Angelina, have offered medical assistance, help with furniture, clothing, immediate necessities, and have been so welcoming.
Going forward, Camilo and I have established a bank account for Hannah.
Donations from this fund will be deposited and will go towards:
-Future Rent
-Food
-Clothing
-Transportation
-Medical Bills and Insurance
I am trying to balance protecting the privacy of Hannah and Angelina alongside forwarding worthy causes such as this one to our friends and colleagues. And while I am not on any social media, should you have any questions or need more information, I can be reached via email at: lap.18@hotmail.com (please type UKRAINE in the subject line); or via text on my cell at: 917-392-7433 (please type UKRAINE in the text).
On behalf of Hannah and Angelina, please accept our gratitude.
