Make Your Own!
Started by: Ana Teran
This fund is for my parents, who tonight, lost absolutely everything they worked hard for in the last 20 years. An explosion caused by a home boiler set their first owned home on fire immediately, destroying every effort put into the home in a matter of minutes. Ignacio, better known as “Nacho” throughout this historic community in the East side of San Antonio, Tx., was outside talking to a neighbor when he heard a loud bang. At first he ignored it and carried on. Soon after, his wife Maria runs out the front door screaming “Nacho!! The House is burning!” “The kids!!” My father ran quickly into the house as my mother also ran to get my niece and nephew from the front bedroom. These kids are their biggest joy in this world. Everything happened so quick, but thanks to their quick action, my mother and her grandchildren were out in the neighborhood’s yard watching the flames consume their beloved home. My father’s job wasn’t done as he knew that his pack of rescue dogs were still in the house. One by one he screamed for them and got them all out but one. His baby Sally was nowhere to be found! He and my mom screamed for Sally, their small black and white terrier mix, but no signs of her. Unable to breathe he came back out of the house. When the firemen arrived, my father ran back in the again to search for Sally, and a couple of fire men ran after him and pulled him out of the house. Upon the fire captain’s notice, firemen went into the house looking for Sally. Fortunately for all, Sally was hiding away, beyond frightened, under the front bedroom bed, where the kids had been playing just but minutes before. The firemen bravely brought the last of my dads family to safety. My father would not give up on his dogs. My father has crawled into a burning home before and saved lives, and tonight, he would do it again. I am beyond proud of my mother’s quick action, as she heard the loud bang and was near the kitchen when the kitchen windows exploded and a massive fire immediately entered the broken windows. My mother said the fire chased the inside of the home so quickly as she screamed for her grandkids. This tragedy to their home and livelihood is a massive challenge and a major blessing that everyone is safe and alive to tell their story. No object takes precedence over their lives. The home my father has been building alongside with the help of his wife, who isn’t shy of hammering away on top of a roof, is now gone. 15 plus years of keeping this home alive now diminished to a burnt frame and clouded memories. All of my father’s tools also destroyed in the fire. He managed to get all new appliances for the home recently, and the home was always to be what my mother wanted. I sit here helpless typing this in the hope that somehow, we all, as a community of amazing people can bring some of it back to them. My parents did not have their home insured against a fire, as that was more of a luxury for them. They barely make ends meet so an extra expense was out of reach. My heart breaks for them tonight but I know their spirit remains as strong as the very first day they saw this come to fruition.
The goal listed is a general goal. Not sure where to go from here and I will be seeking help for them from non-profits in hopes that we can rebuild. Thank you everyone for your support.
