My husband had a mental breakdown and pulled out a gun one day after a traffic altercation and threaten my life and that of my daughters. Reluctantly we called the police to have him taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation. Unfortunately it became an automatic arrest by the state and the courts ordered that we all be separated with no contact. We then endured a year long wait thru the court system to wait the final outcome which the states atty wanted my husband to receive a significant jail term. My daughters and i felt that my husband needed medical help and that it would be detrimental to his health if he were to be jailed. We begged and pleaded for leniency which was reluctantly granted and instead of my husband being thankful or remorseful for his actions, my husband repaid us by filing divorce against me for calling the police that night after 35 years of marriage!!! He has financially and emotionally ruined the lives of me and our three daughters. He hired a slick atty and i had no funds of my own as i had quit work 21 years ago to raise our daughters one of which also suffers mental illness. He and his atty have won the right to sell our joint home and we have to april of 2015 to sell. And on top of that he has stuck me with the college loans we took out to help our daughter get her degree to the tune of $106,000!!! He also stuck me with paying all the bills if i chose to live in the family home until sold. I am 58 years old and have only been able to obtain a part time job. I have had to borrow on the equity of my share of the house. I am devastated. My husband lost his job due to his mental illness and has been denied disability so i was denied alimony . I have written three letters to my state senator to help me and my girls save our house as we have no place to go. My parents are deceased and my husbands family has disowned us for calling the police that fateful night. Its been a nightmare and my daughters and i do not deserve what has happened to us. We are living on minimal foodstamps and medical assistance. I have worked hard my entire life to protect my daughters from his mental illness. No one would listen to me or help and now my daughters and i have to unfairly pay the price for a system that failed to protect us. Thank you.
