Dylan has been doing fantastic in drum lessons, but having a real acoustic drum set has made it tough to practice. It's too loud for the early mornings (the neighbors would hate us) and obviously during Sean's naps. These tend to be the best times for him to practice. Additionally, when I'm working and need to be on meetings it just doesn't work. We're currently borrowing a digital set from his drum teacher and it's been AWESOME. He can practice any time. He just puts his headphones on and bangs away. It's a great way for him to experiment without having to think about everyone in the house hearing him. We also don't have to worry about his little ears going deaf due to the sheer volume of the acoustic set. The digital kit also allows for drum teaching software that turns learning into a game and is shown to be super effective!
We'd like to get the Roland TD-17KVXs which normally costs $1,599 but I know someone at Skip's music who can get it for $1,100. There are cheaper models but this one has the larger mesh heads, the second crash and a realistic hi-hat that moves like a real one. I think this could be a real valuable tool for developing Dylan's (and eventually Sean's!) sense of rhythm and entry into the world of making music.
