"I have found no matter what life throws at me; music softens the blow."
As a daughter of African immigrants, music has always played a significant role in my life. My African culture is rooted deep in music that describes the trials and provides the lessons necessary to live life on this earth. Unfortunately, tragedy hit early. With my mother's passing, I watched those around me seek comfort in those know hymns and notes to nurture their spirit and guide them for the days ahead. Through times of happiness and the trials of sadness or grief, music has always been a welcoming embrace. I place that felt like home.
I have always been in some way involved in a musical department. Starting from my local church choir to various school performances, I have a natural drawing to it. This connection has allowed me to graduate in May from the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelors in Music concentration in Vocal Performance.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I:
-was the recipient of numerous scholarships from the Kristin Lewis Foundation
-Received the Metropolitan Opera Encouragement Award at the AR District Metropolitan Opera Auditions.
-Was a student worker at the University of Central Arkansas Music Department.
While doing this, I also held a job as a barista at the local Starbucks in Conway, AR. These opportunities have provided me with the resources to provide some of the money necessary to continue.
However, my journey is only beginning. Opportunities have opened that I could only dream of like that little girl in my parent's house. I have the privilege of:
-Attending an eight-week Si Parl Si Canta Music Festival in Urbania, Italy. During this time I will be taking Italian language courses, private voice coaching, a chance to participate in master classes.
-Attending Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York in the fall.
I would not be the person I am today without the love and support of my family, friends, and others who believed and continue to believe in my potential. I am humbled when I think about the kind words and open arms of those who attend performances. I would love the opportunity to continue my dream. Thank you.
