Hello!
My name is Cesar. I have been deaf since 9 years old. My deafness was an unfortunate casualty in my war against bone cancer, which I defeated after a long and hard fought battle.
I used to use standard hearing aids and reading lips. They were still not enough. I could hardly understand and could not participate in fast conversations. As I had suffered very profound hearing loss on both sides.
My world changed when my father gifted me with a Cochlear Implant System. using the Nucleus Freedom device.
This device allowed me to finally go forward on life, graduate, have a job, socialize, use the phone, return my love for music and TV/Movies and be able to enjoy family meetings and conversations.
There is unfortunately... a bad side on the story.
As years passed, the company that used to offer me service to cover my implant in my country (a company which pretty much owns a monopoly on medical devices now) started to hike constantly the maintenance, extended guarantee and parts prices. Getting to staggering levels no longer affordable (not even for a middle class citizen in my country, as they can be up to 3X times the price on the USA, Not only that...plus additional 16% tax!!!).
I was suggested to register with the US version and upgrade to get better and cheaper service.
To make things worse, When I finally managed to save enough money to pay part of the costs of the new N6 Processor(9250 USD retail). my current device was declared "obsolete" Just a mere month ago!!( by Cochlear) and I am no longer able to get the tradeup discount of 2000 USD.
Rendering me again unable to get the upgrade I require.
I'm currently working 2 jobs as IT and unfortunately they are still not enough to cover all.
Right now, my current processor is out of guarantee and my telecoil is failing. I cant and refuse to pay to my country's monopoly of the outrageous prices they ask to extend my already limping processor's life. I'm trying my best to make a jump to Cochlear Americas for better service/product at reasonable prices and more modern technology (including Mapping programs).
I'm a proud man and I hate to ask for help. But even the Cochlear officials said the most probable way to get help, was to get crowdfunded. As they are unable to make any exception in their guidelines for the tradeup discount. Nor I can apply for insurance(ineligible in my own country because my deafness counts as existing condition, and I'm not US citizen to apply for a local better one, nor a medical loan to pay it in monthly steps as it requires US citizenship).
I will be extremely grateful if anyone can chip any kind of money they can.
My goal is at least 2,000 USD (to cover the trade-up costs). and 3,000 USD to be able to pay the entire difference in costs (including the doctor appointment, calibration and plane).
