It is with heavy hearts that our family begins this blog to inform family and friends about our dad's sudden and extremely rapid decline in his health. As you all know our dad, Joseph F. Carlevale is by far the most powerful, strongest, amazingly solid rock of our family, and the sudden news is by far one of the hardest things we have ever had to go through in our lives. Our dad has been diagnosed with stage IV aggressive cancer that presents with spots on his brain, liver, lungs, and spleen as well tumors and spots on his eye causing loss of vision.

He noticed the loss of vision in his left eye only a very short 2 1/2 weeks ago and our Dad's health has deteriorated immensely beyond comprehension since then. We are hopeful and positive that we are on the road to recovery, and health and wellness is in our future.

I know we speak for all friends and family (especially the Hockey community) when we describe our dad as a fighter, solid arm wrestler and "the strongest guy we know.” Hockey runs strong in his blood, and we know his love for the ice and the game can help heal him.

From skating with the Quebec Junior Major Hockey League to the NHL Atlanta Flames, it is no surprise you’ll find online stats highlighting the fighter that he was and will always be. Even DropYourGloves.com names him as a top fighter with a record 56 fights (although he informed us this morning that was only a small few which started back in the Bantam hockey days).

Our care began with multiple visits to Beverly Hospital and a series of tests including CAT scans, PET scan's and MRIs as well as biopsies and many other poking and prodding appointments.

With inconclusive tests that point to Melanoma and a rare ocular disease, we have now made our way to MGH in Boston to see the best doctors in the world.

We are creating this fund to help support our Dad’s healing journey while he is out of work and incurring medical expenses and frequent trips into Boston.

Everyone has a story. This one has just begun. Dad you haven't skated your last hockey game yet.

We are grateful for your prayers and support.

With Love,

His daughters: Michelle, Jacqui and Rachael

I love this picture - I am so sad that I cannot be with you on July 22, know that I wil be praying with you and for you here in California-I am a lector at my church, and they had already scheduled me to lector at Morning Mass the morning of July 22- so this is a special gift to me , to be able to remember Joey when I participate in this Mass and read the prayers of the faithful . Love and prayers- cousin Karen

After a very short and aggressive battle with Melanoma, we are deeply saddened to share that our Dad passed peacefully this morning surrounded by his girls, Jeanette, Michelle, Jacqui and Rachael. Dad was one of a kind; he will be missed greatly as he made an impact on the lives of so many. We know he has been called to heaven to watch over his family and friends and to lace up his skates to continue the game that filled his heart with joy. We are extremely grateful for all the continued love and support from all our family and friends and even more thankful that Dad was able to hear all the beautiful sentiments you all have shared about him. He was always so amazed and touched by the support and how much he was loved. The details on a service will shared here very shortly. Love to all,

Salt of the earth"..Reliable, trustworthy and straightforward. This is how I have seen Joe During the years I have come to appreciate how important these characteristics were for me. It is a way of living. I am sure that those who have lived with you day to day experienced you a little differently but as a friend of nearly 35 years, I have grown to appreciate the down to earth, no bull approach to life. You worked hard, have been devoted to your wife, children and grandchildren and value your friends. You always took a few minutes to "check in" ... To see how things are going for me and offer some tid-bit about the "Sox, the Bruins or the Pats". Tough as nails but always appreciated a good book, a classic piece of art and a "long drive straight down the fairway" I am honored to have been part of your life and will miss you. Fred and Pam

It is a precious and holy time and I pray you will have many consolations from the Lord to help you, and guide you in the days ahead. My prayers will continue to be with you all. Love, cousin Karen

Dear family and friends, Thank you for the calls, texts, messages and constant love and support. Please know that although Dad wanted so badly to be at the church tomorrow with you all, his health will not allow him to be there. As such, our family will not be attending the service as noted in the previous update. We will keep everyone updated and will be sure to give your love to Dad as he continues his hospice care. With love and gratitude, Jeanette, michelle, jacqui, rachael

Dad will be attending the 9am service at Trinity Episcopal Church on 124 River Road in Topsfield this Sunday, July 9th. You are welcome to attend with our family. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the wonderful continued support and love. Dad is very lucky to have such amazing family and friends who love him dearly. I spoke with Linda, Auntie Joyce & Uncle Joe yesterday after I saw LInda's texts on Joe's current health status- -my love and prayers continue to be with you all- May the Lord's Holy Spirit console you as only He is able to do at this time with the power of his presence within each of you to give you all the courage and support you need. I am so sad I cannot be with you at the 9 AM Sunday Service - I will be there in Spirit and will unite my prayers with you all while I am at Mass here on Sunday morning. God be with you.Much love , cousin Karen

A long overdue update to share Dad's progress with our family and friends. This week, we have so much to be thankful for including Dad's continued upward progress on his healing journey. He continues with his daily chemo; gaining a little more strength back each day and has even been able to get out daily for a short walk in the fresh air. This week, we were so lucky to have Mom and Dad together to celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary. We are also grateful for Dad's amazing group of "Saturday Morning Hockey Buddies" who gathered with grills, steak, chicken, desserts, smiles, laughs and Joe Strong shirts to celebrate Dad's life. Dad was even able to join for a few stories and hugs. (This photo is missing a handful of the guys). Dad is so grateful every day for the amazing continued support and love from all our friends and family. Thank you to everyone <3

Nice to see ! Love the smile!

Dad was released from the hospital and remains on daily chemotherapy and will return to MGH every three weeks to receive immunotherapy. As you can see from this thumbs-up photo taken from his new hospital bed at home, he is happy to be home. His cancer cell count has gone down (woohoo!) and we are praying for the best; hoping his numbers continue to improve. He cannot have visitors yet as rest is imperative for his healing, as well as boosting his immune system. We are blessed to have the continued support from all of our family and friends as Dad continues his journey to healing. <3

That-a-boy Joe. I can see in your eyes that you are on the way back! Joe STRONG! Johnny

Our family thanks everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the overwhelming generosity and outpouring of everyone's wishes, prayers, thoughts and donations to our family. We are taking each day hour by hour believing he can heal. This pic is from just 3 weeks ago. Only a short few weeks ago, he was biking, kayaking in the Ipswich Waters, walking the beach, playing hockey, mowing his lawn, hitting the gym, and now fighting the biggest fight of his life. He is extremely weak and after a week of struggling to get in and out of bed to keep his muscles moving he is no longer able to get out of bed on his own. He began immunotherapy and chemo immediately, has been admitted to the hospital and is now in the hands of the best doctors in the world at MGH. We have read him everyone's notes, messages, and prayers, and have shared with him the generous donations you have all given in his name to help heal him and to support our family, and he is so grateful for everyone.

Joey, you are a fighter, as everyone who has laced them up with you (and everyone who has made the mistake of dropping the gloves with you) knows. We are all with you. While I might not know how to cook steamers ;-) I've always taken and benefited from your hockey advice. Time for me to return the favor, Big Fella. I've worked in biomedicine for a few decades and know something about what you're fighting. This is treatable and can be overcome. We are all with you in this fight, Joey. Your pal, #4

Joe....we are supposedly work friends. You call me once a week and we talk about 2% work and the rest of the time about family, sports, and maybe politics. I look forward to those calls. So this is selfish.... could you please get better, get back too work and get me more clams. I won't accept no for an answer.

Joe, we have fought the toughest of fights and this my friend is just one more battle that you must continue to fight. I know personally how tough you are which is why I helped get you to Sherbrooke.
