The Martinka family is traveling to Delaware so that 5-year-old Addie can get surgery on her legs (bilateral proximal tibia and fibula osteotomies). The surgery will help relieve the chronic pain in her legs and knees caused by a genetic condition called achondroplasia.

This fund will help pay for medical costs directly related to the surgery, as well as lodging costs and anything that might help the Martinkas get through this challenging time.

Latest Update

We wanted to share an update as to why this fund is set up: I've been asked time and time again why we go to these doctors and take on massive debts for visits and travel when there are doctors who can do it locally and will be covered? The first story I remember hearing from another LPA (Little People of America) family about going to a wonderful doctor that was not a specialist in dwarfism ended with that sweet babe in a halo and having repeat surgery in DE, where we go, to help repair the damage to her spine. Again, last night, my heart broke, when I heard of a child who had a surgery for their legs by an amazing, local doctor who "had experience with dwarfism". Who improperly did the surgery. This child will now have a 2nd procedure and more xrays to correct it, by specialists. This is why. We are forever grateful for your help and understanding in giving our child what is truly needed for the best quality of life. No one should die in debt to live in health.

Addie is OFF all pain meds, except for exceptional circumstances, like really hard days where she's been trying to get around a lot. We go for follow up xrays, through her casts, tomorrow at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI, to make sure nothing has moved out of place. Those xrays are sent to DE to be viewed by her doctor there. As long as everything is OK, casts are set to come off at 8:30am on September 18th back in Delaware! She'll be fitted for knee braces and have a few sessions with PT to make sure she's comfortable trying out her legs a little at a time. It's already been a long 2 weeks, with a long 6 week stretch ahead... but eyes on the goal: No more pain for our girl. Thank you for you continued support, Chelley, Dave, Addie and Millie Martinka

Hello friends! It's been a week since surgery. We are slowly getting back into the swing of things- which is hard when summer is still here and Addie just wants to be like the other kids. The enormous generosity shown has blown us away, and we can't express the blessing we feel with some of the stress taken off of our shoulders. Thank you for your continued love and prayers to our sweet Addie as she continues to heal and process this journey. xo Chelley and Dave

Hi all. First, on behalf of the Martinkas, I want to say thank you so much for the overwhelming support! You are all amazing and your support means that Chelley and Dave can focus on their girls more and worry about money a little less. Second, I've updated the goal amount. I had set the initial goal of $5,000 based purely on a guess, but it was a poor guess on my part. After talking with Chelley, I now know the cost of the surgery will be at least $30,000 out of pocket - AFTER accounting for secondary insurance, out-of-network private insurance, and Medicaid contributions. This is a staggering amount, but if donations can cover even 1/3 of the cost, that will be a huge help. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me privately at ewokgirl[at]gmail.com and I will do my best to answer them so that Chelley and Dave only have to worry about Addie and Millie. Thank you again for your generosity!
