On Friday Oct 12, I took Maeby to the vet after noticing a few little things I thought would amount to "over protective cat parent." After 3 days of hospitalization, two blood transfusions, a constant stream of negative test results, we finally got a diagnosis Wed Oct 17: FeLV had been hiding in her bone marrow and not showing up on tests.

There is no cure or effective treatment for FeLV.

Maeby went peacefully in my arms, at home. I'll miss her forever and always.

Latest Update

I first held Maeby when she was days old. The runt of the litter and feisty as hell, we would watch her burrow under her littermate as she fought to find a nipple, and she was the first to start exploring the wide world around them. She would barely let anyone hold her for more than a few seconds before she was wiggling to get free. Until I picked her up. She looked at me, then promptly fell asleep in my hands. Every single time. I've never had anyone pick me as hard as she did. It took me longer than it should to realize I'd picked her just as hard. FeLV usually shows up in a blood test. Maeby's never did; they had to test her bone marrow to find it. I'm glad I have answers, and that I got a couple of days to shower her with love, all her favorite treats, and to ease her passing with the help of a lot of very supportive people. Even if you can't give anything monetarily, know that I appreciate you, and any stories or memories you might have of Maeby are just as valuable.

Jones finally died at their home some years ago, in France. I've never even been to France. But Jones was great and I still love her even though she's been gone for many years now. Even have her picture up at my parents place.
