Heidi, a teacher at Complete High School Maize, USD 266, is seeking funding for a facility therapy dog for Complete High School Maize in rural area outside Wichita, KS.
I am a volunteer with Paws for Freedom, Inc., a not-for-profit in the Kansas City area (www.pawsforfreedom.org), and I have decided to help Heidi in her efforts. Heidi applied to PFF last year for a facility therapy dog but was unable to gather the needed funding for placement.
The students that attend CHSM choose to go there because they have been unsuccessful at the traditional high school academically, emotionally or socially. Many students at CHSM struggle with anxiety and/or depression, and the majority of students at CHSM have experienced bullying in their lives. CHSM strives to focus on not only academics but also helping students successfully address the various emotional, social and family/home-life challenges they face.
As Heidi wrote in her application: Several students need a “friend” and a positive aspect to their lives that would motivate them to persevere through high school. For example, we recently had a pet lizard that lived at the school; during the five years that Ziggy was a part of the science classroom, many students bonded with her. Students who had few friends at the traditional high school became friends with Ziggy and looked forward to holding her every day. Several students found that they were able to focus better in class when they could hold the lizard on their lap during activities. The connection that these students felt toward Ziggy was evident [last January] when she passed away and the students held a funeral for her. Even a scaly lizard had a positive emotional effect on these students who have struggled socially; I believe a dog would have even more of an effect.
The dog partnered with Heidi would live with her and her husband full-time, being a part of their family as a pet when not at school. Once Heidi is partnered with a dog, she and her husband will be personally and financially responsible for all of the dog's needed care.
The cost for a trained facility therapy dog is $5000.00 plus the cost of a hotel while attending a 2-week training camp in the Kansas City area to learn how to work with the dog. Total cost to Heidi is approximately $6300.00
Last year when Heidi applied for a therapy dog, she also applied to a separate resource for a grant to cover the cost of the dog; a lot of money, but less than half of the cost of the two-to-three years of training for each PFF dog. There is a lot of competition for such grant monies, and Heidi did not receive her grant. Heidi has applied for the grant again this year, but will not know until the last minute if she has received funding.
If Heidi receives the grant funding, I plan to direct any money collected to another facility therapy or service dog recipient needing funding or toward animal-assisted therapy in another facility by Paws for Freedom directly. If Heidi gets the grant and you would rather have your money back, I can return to you your donation (minus any credit card fees if you paid by credit card).
I will keep this page updated on our outcome!
Thank you for whatever monies you can contribute and for spreading the word. I promise I will be a good steward of whatever monies we gather.
Please note, since we are supporting Heidi directly in her payment to Paws for Freedom, Inc. (www.PawsForFreedom.org), any contributions we make are not tax-deductible.
Thank you for sharing your caring!
