On October 22, 2016 Angelo and Luna were let out of their backyard in Aurora CO. They were wandering around an apartment complex and police responded before animal control. An officer decided to "put this mother(expletive) down", exited his vehicle and shot Angelo, barking and wagging his tail over 12 to 15 feet away, with a 12 gauge shotgun. His owner Valeria Rios had to pay for him to be euthanized and cremated. She has retained The Piccone Law Firm, LLC in connection with this matter and needs help with her costs and retainer.

Latest Update

We have taken the first step towards obtaining justice for Angelo by putting the city of Aurora on notice of Ms. Rios' legal claim for violation of her civil rights by the malicious and intentional killing of her dog Angelo. We will update you as to whether the City responds to this letter. It's been sent to the 4 officers most intimately involved in the shooting, the police chief, the city attorney, the city manager and risk management.

It's unknown whether Angelo will ever get justice. Pursuing a civil claim is hard work and his family has very little money to do it. We may not be able to move forward unless we can get at least $2,000 together for his legal fund. Please help if you can.

On behalf of Valeria and my firm, I want to thank everyone who has contributed thus far. Today Valeria made the difficult decision to plead guilty to one charge of possessing an aggressive animal, in exchange for the remaining eight charges being dismissed. The reasoning for doing this was pragmatic. The City only had to prove that either the woman with the Dauschund or the police officers were approached "in an apparent attitude of attack whether or not the attack was capable of being consummated." So this means their burden of proof would have been met with either the woman or any of the officers who saw Angelo and Luna jumping on the officer's car to say they felt the dogs were going to attack them, even if they couldn't physically get to them (like the officer thinking they were attacking him through the car door when they really wanted inside to go for a ride.) So as of today, the criminal case is over and we can focus on moving forward with the civil claim against the City.

Our goal is to raise just over $1300 in the next week to be able to cover the cost of a jury trial. We have gone to court three times since taking over representation in November and most of the donations received have already been used up on the 55+ hours of attorney time already spent on this case. A significant discount has been applied to that time, but we need a final push.

Valeria's criminal jury trial is coming up on January 31 in Aurora Municipal Court. She's having to fight charges that Angelo and Luna attacked people the night of October 22 even though not one credible, law abiding witness has came forward allegedly witnessing the attack. No one was hurt that night except Angelo who paid with his life for getting loose.

So in your part the world a dog that has managed to escape from its enclosure can be taken out by an over enthusiastic cop with a twelve gauge Shot gun before animal control can intervene & get the animal back to its owner. Of course had to be justified but witnesses can't to corroborate that dog was attacking people. As usual those in Power covering their arses. To the owner of the dog, I'm extremely sorry for loss. I hope you & your will get justice but I won't hold my breathe.

Thank you for everyone who donated for the screening of the documentary Of Dogs and Men. We raised about $750 dollars and raised awareness of an epidemic. More importantly we let this family know they are not alone in their sorrow. If you were not able to attend you can still help contribute to the legal defense fund. I also have some copies of the movie available for purchase. I'd ask for a minimum $30 donation to cover shipping and the $16 per disc wholesale cost (about $10 per disc will be our profit). I'll be returning unsold copies later this week.

The Piccone Law Firm is pleased to announce the first public screening in Colorado of the award winning documentary Of Dogs and Men OUR PROTECTORS: OUR DOGS. OUR POLICE OFFICERS. They are colliding with tragic results and the U.S. Department of Justice estimates that more than 10,000 pet dogs are shot and killed every year. But there are people fighting for change. THIS IS THEIR STORY. This is a licensed public screening in the small community room of the Central Aurora Library. Seating is reserved and is limited to 30 people. Individuals who have already donated up to $50 and RSVP to juliet@thepicconelawfirm.com will be given reserved seats first, then individuals who donate up to $50 until we reach capacity. 4 seats are reserved for Valeria Rios' family (free of charge) and 4 for media (first to email confirmation). If any seats are left on the day of the show, they will be first come first serve

Correction: The minimum donation for pre-sale tickets is $50; day of show will be minimum of $25 if there are any spots left. The original post was incorrect in saying a maximum donation of $50 per spot. So sorry for the mistake, if you donated less than $50 in hopes of securing a ticket before this correction was issued, please email me at juliet@thepicconelawfirm.com The license cost $250, so we need to recoup that before we can even start raising $ for the legal fund.

Ms. Piccone has assembled a great investigative/trial team. She has retained the investigators (2 along with a use of force canine expert) and has associated with a former federal prosecutor to defend the municipal court case. The Jury Trial has been reset to January 31, 2017 at our request. Tomorrow, December 21, 2016 the court will hear argument on 2 of the city's motions, one of which is to try to put a gag order on Ms. Piccone. The city is just driving up the cost of defense with motions like this, but everyone involved is taking seriously reduced fees or donating their time to try to get JUSTICE FOR ANGELO.

Thanks to you we are getting closer to being able to hire the private investigator. But we can't prepare for a jury trial with no funds, so please keep spreading the word so we can get Justice for Angelo. The cops get away with blowing dogs away because people can't afford to fight them.

Today I met with an investigator who is willing to help with Angelo and Luna's case at a reduced fee. I need at least $500 to retain him, and that does not cover my time. We probably won't get justice for Angelo if we can't hire the investigator.
