As some of you may know, and some of you may not, Malcolm is our 1.5 year old Bassett Hound. He is our son, and a brother to our two kids and his dog sister. He is our ever loving fur buddy who won't accept not being petted or acknowledged. He is our slobbery kiss giver and mud sharer. He is our family and our heart.

Latest Update

Today is the last day to donate! We want to thank everyone again for all of the donations, thoughts, prayers, and support. Those gifts have been invaluable throughout this process and we are beyond humbled.

We are hoping this life preserver of a cone works better than the plastic one he destroyed in less than 2 hours earlier today. Pure Bassett hound stubbornness.

The fundraiser for Malcolm will be ending tomorrow. We appreciate all of the donations thus far to help out with his medical expenses and are in awe of the generosity people have shown. If you have been thinking about donating and haven't yet, today and tomorrow is your chance. Every penny counts. Malcolm is doing well this morning! The vet said she is not worried about him just eating ice cubes and he should get back to drinking water at some point. He gets his stitches out next Saturday. I have decided to make their food at home given his tummy issues, it will allow us to have more control over the ingredients and hoping it will help alleviate/ward off any digestion problems. I'm using my Mom's recipe that she used for our sweet labs, Moses and Sage. Please keep our boy in your thoughts and prayers as he is on the mend! Thank you everyone 💛

I wear the cone of shame today because my mom has to go into the office to work. But my Mimi will be visiting me later today so I guess it's not all bad. I'm officially past the "danger zone" of complications but I know my parents will always worry about me a lot. I've been through a lot this past week but it sure makes me happy to know so many people care about me. I mean, I'm kind of irresistible I know, but still. The outpouring of love just makes me feel tingly and warm, or did I just have an accident?! Either way, I'm feeling good. When does the cone of shame come off again, Mom?

Malcolm has wanted to play with sister more today so have had to keep them separated for the most part. He is not drinking water but will take ice cubes and his moist food has a large amount of water content in it and he still has urine output so not too worried about that at this point by something we will be watching. TMI but very important to his progres: he had a good large solid brown poo last night-no more black tar poo! So far so good and after today and tomorrow his chances for complications decrease drastically. You all are so awesome for everything and I'm sure Malcolm would give you a big slobbery kiss if he could!

He looks pitiful there. :) So glad he seems to be making progress.

I am so glad he continues to improve! I love doggy kisses!!!

Went for a checkup to ensure incision is healing well and they said he looks great and just need to keep him from licking and put some antibiotic cream on it once a day. Such a relief to hear! Thanks again everyone for your support and encouragement!

Aww so glad he seems to be healing. Give him a hug and kiss from us.

We got to pick our sweet boy up this morning. He was so excited to come home and see his sister. 72 hours and we will be in the safe(r) zone. There is a spot on his incision that is looking redder so keeping an eye on that. And still groaning and whining because of the pain. Otherwise he is the same little guy that loves to be right by our sides. He's still even wanting upper belly rubs 😊❤️

Yay!!! Malcolm keep fighting and healing!!!

Vet just called and said everything is still looking stable. Now the moment of truth comes. Eating time. They offered him food for the first time but he had also just had his pain meds and was too drowsy to eat. They are leaving it with him overnight and will be calling with another update tomorrow morning. This is crucial to know if his intestines will work successfully, or not. Thank you to everyone who is thinking of him, praying for him, have sent the sweetest and most supportive messages and who have donated to help him fight this fight. It means more than any of you will ever know.

I realize most of you have so many other obligations financially, so many other causes and people that you could give to, especially in the wake of the hurricanes, and so many things you also could hold onto your money for. This surgery alone was over $2k and with aftercare will pass well into the $3k mark. We realized taking on a pet is a huge responsibility when we brought Malcolm and Penny home as babies, but unexpected emergencies such as these were not something we were actively prepared for. We are humbly asking for any help you may be able to give to assist us with Malcolm's medical expenses. Even if it were $20k, we still would have proceeded, because who can put a price tag on a loved one's life?

He went into emergency surgery on the night of Friday, September 8 for what was a suspected corn cob causing an intestinal blockage. After 2.5 hours in surgery and 1.5 feet of intestines removed during a process of resection and anastomosis, it turns out it wasn't a corn cob at all (Malcolm was never much of a fan for veggies anyhow), but was instead something called Intussusception where basically one part of his intestine had kaleidoscoped another part into it. Had we waited much longer, Malcolm would not have made it. He had a successful surgery, thank God, and now the harder part begins: recovery. The next five days are crucial for his survival given a major complication of the type of surgery he had is sepsis from leakage in the intestines.
