Washington and Jefferson College offers courses during the month of January when winter break is in effect. These courses can be taken on campus as well as off campus. The off campus course trips are designed to display a topic related to the travel area. In particular, the Jay-term course I am interested in is related to immigration and relationship between the U.S. and Mexican borders. During this trip, we will be interacting with natives and learning about the current policy influences on immigration. There are issues occurring right in the US that we are ignorant to. My goal is to be educated on such a growing topic at the root of where it is found and to be able to educate others on these issues. I hope to serve alongside those who are seeking peace with the issue and delivering water and food packs to locations along the Sonoran desert. Those traveling from Mexico through the desert is highly dangerous. Water is scarce and the heat is unbearable. Simple acts like this can save lives and I want to be a part of the movement. I have a friend who is an immigrant from Mexico, but I do not have a first hand experience of the situations that are occurring. You can’t truly understand and have awareness unless you bring yourself to knowing both sides at the root. I appreciate any guidance and help to allow me to be a part of this experience
