This year, I am moving to a brand new magnet school where every teacher will utilize blended and personalized learning through technology to meet the needs of all students. They will also learn coding and have lots of opportunities for exploration with a focus on STEAM and their individual interests. I received my Blended & Online Teaching Certification this year and have been writing about the power of having a computer in every child's hand on my blog: www.blendedlearningideas.com.
Last year, I was super fortunate to receive a class set of Chromebooks thanks to a $5,000 grant I wrote for the CenturyLink Teachers & Technology Program. My students worked on their individual computers every day to write blog entries, create animated slideshows, and work through a personalized curriculum tailored to their needs. They even created their own video games and had teachers and parents test out their designs during an "Arcade" so they could iterate on their designs.
However, CenturyLink informed me that I had to leave my Chromebooks at my previous school because the school was technically the grant recipient. And my new school will not be able to provide me with a class set in our first year of operation.
So, I am raising the money myself this time so that as long as I am teaching, the computers will stay with me. That way my students will always be able to experience all the opportunities technology can provide.
Terms of this grant:
- I, Claire Cummings, will be the sole owner of the Chromebooks.
- I will purchase the technology immediately and provide donors with updates and photos on my blog Getting Schooled In Blended Learning (www.blendedlearningideas.com).
- If I decide to leave education for good, the Chromebooks will be donated to my last school.
- This money will only be used to purchase Chromebooks and any accessories/programs to be used with the Chromebooks.
- The $5,000 will be used to purchase 25 Lenovo N42 4GB Chromebooks at roughly $200 per laptop.
