Enkontros ('encounters' in Ladino) brings together musical and dance genres that developed independently because of the Spanish & Portuguese Inquisitions (15th/16th c.) when Sephardic Iberian refugees migrated to lands worldwide, including N. Africa, the Middle East, Balkans & Americas.
In exile, the Ladino language and musical genre became a hallmark of some of these refugees. In the absence of their voices, flamenco developed in Spain (18th c) & fado in Portugal (early 19th c). Maracatu alludes to NE Brazil, where some found temporary refuge in the 16th & 17th c.
