In August of 2014 we were ecstatic to find out Christopher and Amanda were going to have a baby. On October 2nd the family gathered together at Amanda’s ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby….IT’S A BOY…we were so excited, however this was not the only news we would receive that day. Baby Ethan has congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This is a condition where the diaphragm is not forming properly therefore the organs do not stay in the correct place.

Ethan will need surgery shortly after being born.

In seeking out the best care for Ethan, Christopher and Amanda will need to relocate to Gainesville FL. Here Ethan will have the best care possible. They will be moving in February and most likely will be in Gainesville for at least three months.

This is where our family and friends come in…. Bills have been mounting in the past months, given tests and doctor appointments that are required to keep a check on BABY ETHAN’S progress. The medical bills will continue as surgeries and months of hospital stays will happen.

We are asking first for your prayers (as many of you have been doing) and second we are asking for your financial support.

HELP BRING BABY ETHAN HOME

PRAY AND DONATE

THANK YOU TO ALL FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND LOVE DURING THIS MOST DIFFICULT TIME

WE HAVE A GREAT FAMILY, WONDERFUL FRIENDS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE DOCTORS

GOD HAS BLESSED US AND WE ARE THANKFUL FOR HIS BLESSING EVERYDAY

Latest Update

We've really enjoyed keeping you updated throughout the months on plumfund. If you aren't already, please feel free to become my Facebook friend so you may continue to get updates about Ethan. You have been with us on this entire journey and we couldn't have made it without you. Thanks to you we were able to support ourselves living near the hospital and keep up with things back home. We came into this experience ready to loose it all: our house, our jobs, and even Ethan's life. But today we have an 8 month old baby boy who is full of life in our beautiful dream home we bought to raise a family and a job I get the privilege to go to with a work family that has been supportive in every way. Life is good. There is joy once more in the Wyatt family. Thank you for your continued support from the bottom of our hearts. -Amanda and Chris

October 16, 2015- Happy 8 months old Ethan!!!! Life is good. Our baby is growing and getting stronger and stronger each day. He brings so much JOY into our lives. He's a great baby (really people can't get over how good he is). He's doing great without supplemental oxygen, and mom and dad are loving it! We had gotten so used to caring for a baby with oxygen tanks and cords that we didn't realize how cumbersome life was with it. But we will never complain because LIFE with Ethan is just better no matter what medical challenge we must overcome. Ethan has overcome so much, and we are amazed by him every day. He now reaches for who he wants to hold him and when he reaches for me my heart just melts. He is drinking 700-900ml of milk each day! He weighs 13lbs 5.5ozs! Solids, well it's a slow road. He's eating baby food carrots, puffs (3 different flavored), baby cookies, baby yogurt, sweet potatoes from the table, and well more puffs. He has two teeth that have cut through! Amanda & Chris

September 16, 2015- Happy 7 months old Ethan! He now breaths without help from supplemental oxygen! AND is off all his medications! He continues to drink more and more milk orally. He's now up to about 700ml per day. We have started introducing solids again and have found success in carrots! He can roll from stomach to back. He can sit up with waist support. His trunk balance is getting better and better. He has learned to use his hands/arms to balance himself while sitting. He can take his bottle/paci out of his mouth and find it to put it back in as he wants. He continues to teethe and has some teeth beginning to break through the gum. His clothing sizes remain the same. He weighs 12lbs 13oz. His weight gain is slow but is increasing. Ethan is such a blessing to us, and we love him dearly. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan is a champ

August 16, 2015- Happy 6 months old Ethan! You are 1/2 year old today! It has been 46 days of eating entirely by mouth and not having to use his gtube for feedings. We started him on rice cereal but have found that he's not ready for solid foods yet. However he is dominating his oral feeds. He's now eating between 600-700ml per day!!! And holding his own bottle! He is drooling everywhere because he's teething. But no teeth have broken the surface yet. He's gotten exceptionally good at putting everything and anything straight into his mouth. He's found his feet! It's adorable....and they go straight into his mouth. He rolls from back to side and side to back! He understands the words: paci, milk, and kiss. He makes fish lips at us to give us kisses. His oxygen was weened from 200ml to 125ml! He has graduated to all 6 months clothes with the exception that he's still wearing newborn shorts. He weighs 12lbs 11.5ozs and is 26.63" long! -Amanda and Chris

So many accomplishments in 6 months! Ethan is adorable & we can't wait to meet ur little happy man😍

July 16, 2015- Happy 5 months old Ethan! We have HUGE news to share! Something finally clicked and Ethan just started wanting to eat. Slowly he began eating more and more over a two week time period until now he's eating all of his milk orally! We are at 15 days in a row of not having to use his gtube to feed him! Amazing! Unbelievable! Life changing! ...I now wake up with him to feed him every 1-3 hours at night as he's not being fed through the night he's not sleeping through the night BUT he wakes up just to eat and then goes right back to sleep. He even cries when he's hungry now which he'd never done before. He still is holding onto a little bit of congestion from the rhinovirus but well enough that his oxygen got weaned from 300ml to 200ml! He had his OT/PT evaluation, and the lady starts coming to the house next week for his first session. He's wearing size newborn shorts, 3 month rompers, and 6 month footie pajamas. He weighs 11.75 lbs and is 26 in long! -Amanda and Chris

Such wonderful news. I'm so excited for him and you. Continued prayers

Marsha Gerard — 8 years ago

5 months I can hardly believe it’s been that long…..all the months of praying that Ethan would make it to the day of his birth at shands……then all the minutes, hours, days, weeks ,and months of prayers that he would one day come home. Now I stand over him in his crib in pure gratefulness that God blessed us with the miracle that our family, friends and people who we don’t even know prayed for. Ethan has a long way to go and I know at times things will be difficult for Ethan and mom and dad. As for me I will forever be saying THANK YOU & PRAISING GOD FOR THE WONDERFUL BLESSING OUR GRANDSON ETHAN.

July 11, 2015- Ethan's first movie: Minions!!!! He watched the screen and followed the characters as they moved from one part of the screen to the other. He was awake for the first and last parts but took a nap in the middle. He loved his first movie experience and did really great! -Amanda

June 27, 2015- Today Ethan met his Ashley Family for the first time at our annual company picnic which was held at the Florida Aquarium. He loves meeting new people and was his usual happy self when someone new would come say hello. He also got to meet several of my co-workers' babies. There were three of us at my office who had babies within a week of each other and another was born 1.5 months later. Ethan was awake for the first part of the Aquarium this time and slept through the second part. He loved the ducks, the alligator, and the otters who were all very active for him then he fell asleep. We had a really great time! -Amanda and Chris

June 21, 2015- Happy Father's Day Chris! You've been through some really rough times getting to this day, but here you are. One of the reasons I wanted to marry you was because I knew you'd be a great dad. Now here you are just that, a dad, a really great dad. A dad who spent days upon days staring up at all the numbers in the NICU memorizing what each of them meant and learning from the staff how all the machines/equipment worked. A dad who mastered the gtube care before it was even taught to us. A dad who supported me in my breast pumping efforts. A dad who now spends every day caring for Ethan: feeding him, changing his diapers, making his bottles, washing and sterilizing his bottles, giving him his medicine, taking him to his doctors appointments, doing his laundry, and working with him on his development skills. Ethan is beyond blessed you are his dad; I am beyond blessed I get to watch you be his dad. (The picture by Stacey was Chris' Father's Day gift from Ethan.) -Amanda

June 16, 2015- (a continuation of post 4 months old part 3) ... He's getting stronger and stronger with his abdominal and back muscles and sits up better and better. He still struggles with eating by mouth but Dr. Kays is very happy that he is eating the amount he's eating orally. He's doing so well! 4 months it seems so surreal. We didn't know if he'd ever make it to 4 days let alone 4 months. Everyday is a blessing. Everyday he fills our hearts with joy. Everyday we enjoy living in our happy ending. Everyday we are thankful to God. -Amanda and Chris

June 16, 2015- (a continuation of post 4 months old, part 2) ... Now I'm the mom promoting it. The things we do for our children. Ethan however has learned that he hates the NoseFrida. He starts crying as soon as he sees it now and won't stop until it's out of sight. Hopefully his fear of it will decrease over time, and he will laugh like the other kids do when their mommy's use it. Ethan is very social, observant, sweet, loves life, quite the flirt, smart, and a great baby. He still has the most gorgeous blue eyes and his hair color is yet to be determined although it is growing longer finally. He's still all dad; right now he's got my long legs and my crazy facial expressions but that's it. It's a good thing his middle name is his father's because he truly is his mini me. ....

June 16, 2015- Happy 4 months old Ethan! Ethan's been back to the hospital twice now in the last month. He's still getting over his cold that hospitalized him the second time for 4 days. He's spent much of this month with his mommy as his daddy was away for 3 weeks. Thankfully he has two grandmas that couldn't love him more and helped this mama make it through. He grew out of his bassinet and now sleeps in a small crib. He's went down on his oxygen at his follow-up appointment with Dr. Kays, but in a few short hours, his oxygen had to be turned up higher than when we left the NICU due to his increased breathing from being sick. Due to his increased snot from being sick, we've bought one of those NoseFridas (that I've sworn I'd never buy or even worse...use) cause the blue bulb doesn't get the snot out. The doctors recommended it upon leaving the hospital saying that's what they use on their kids. I was desperate and bought it. Turns out that thing works really well! ....

June 14, 2015- We just got discharged from the hospital! Ethan is still stuffy but breathing well on his own even with the congestion, so we are off to battle the rest of this sickness at home. In the process, I too have gotten sick from caring for him but have been very blessed to have my mom come to help care for us in the hospital. I think Ethan wanted mommy to know what he's going through so I could properly speak up for him. Daddy comes home today too, and we couldn't be more excited for our family to be reunited. -Amanda

June 12, 2015- We are settled into Shands from being transferred from TGH. We made it to our room where I was quite impressed at how prepared they were for our arrival. We've seen many friendly faces, doctors and friends alike. His doctors have put a plan together to make him more comfortable for him to recover. He finally has been able to rest and get some peaceful sleep. It's hard to know that such a simple thing like a cold has gotten Ethan so sick. We take so many extra precautions to keep him healthy, but even with all of our effort, we can't protect him from everything. It's hard not to see him as his happy, smiling, giggling self. They are concerned as he gets sicker that he will have to work harder to breathe. He's now in the best hands possible, and we are so very blessed to have him in such great care that if anything happens they will be able to react quickly. -Amanda

June 11, 2015- Ethan hasn't been feeling well. It started yesterday morning with him being stuffy. He went to the pediatrician yesterday. They ran some tests but didn't find anything and asked us to keep an eye on it. If it gets worse, we were to take him to the ER. He went home after that and slept. He gradually got worse and worse. At 2:30am, he was inconsolable. He was highly congested to the point he was having difficulty with his breathing. That's when we took him to the ER at TGH. TGH did an X-ray, blood work, and ran tests for different infections. He tested positive for Rhinovirus/Entrovirus, which is basically the common cold. They couldn't read his X-ray because they didn't have a base line X-ray. They got with Shands who said they wanted him back up here because they are concerned as he gets sicker he's going to breathe harder. They transported him by ambulance to Shands. -Amanda

June 6, 2015- There were so many families at the CDH reunion today. It was amazing to see so many CDH kids grown up and thriving. They played corn hole, swam in the springs, got their face painted, took superhero pictures, and ate from a huge spread of food. Their personalities are the sweetest. One couldn't leave without giving everyone, including Ethan, knuckles (fist bumps); one was tickled pink by Ethan and just wanted to be close to him; others asked why he was on oxygen which is when their parents said you had that too and would explain; one thought she needed his paci and put it in her mouth (funny because she won't take one for her parents). These kids have huge obstacles to overcome at the beginning of their lives but little by little they overcome them until eventually you can't pick one out of the crowd. Literally, I couldn't tell who was the CDH survivor and who was a sibling at the reunion unless their parent told me. How amazing is that! -Amanda

June 5, 2015- Ethan and I got all packed up and ready to go. We loaded the car, then picked up Grandma Wendy from school, and headed to Gainesville for the CDH reunion. The entire car was full with everything we needed for just one night's stay. A baby without special needs requires many things but my golly all the extra things Ethan needs makes for a very full car. The CDH reunion welcome reception event was fantastic! I got to personally meet several of the CDH families who I've made friends with via Facebook. It's almost weird to introduce myself because I feel like I already know them. Then I also got to meet other families I hadn't connected with via Facebook. Many of Ethan's NICU nurses were there and their family members too. Mostly I looked around the room and felt intimidated to stand amongst this group of people. Their strength, courage, kindness, faith, and love shines out to everyone around them. They are incredible people. -Amanda

June 2-4, 2015- I slipped my feet back into my high-heels from giving them a rest over night to find they were terribly sore, apparently my feet had forgotten how to wear high-heels. Besides sore feet, my first week back at work was great. I felt very comfortable with Ethan in his Grandma's care, so I wasn't filled with worry. Actually work was soothing and was a break from my 24/7 mom job. It's great to talk with people I haven't seen in months who have been cheering for us and our happy ending. On Monday, I even got quite the welcoming reception at our standup meeting with cheers lots of clapping, hugs, and an Ethan update request. My Ashley family welcomed me back with wide open arms. They truly are a great group of people who I get the privilege to call co-workers. We wouldn't be standing as tall if it wasn't for the support they so freely gave. Ethan loved his first week at daycare. He loved watching the older kids play. Before I know it, he'll be playing with them. -Amanda

It is great going from Marshi's day care to grandma's day care 👣😇

June 1, 2015- Today was my first day back to work after 6 weeks off and first day back in the office after 4 full months of being away. What a day. I woke three hours before needing to be at work, so I could do everything I needed to do to get ready and get Ethan ready. I was doing so well, until he was being vented and lots of milk came up, which is normal for this time of day, but then the milk went everywhere due to his vent tube becoming disconnected. He had milk on his diaper, his stomach, all down his legs, all over his clothes, and bedding. He was sleeping until of course the spilt milk woke him crying. Medical equipment is wonderful until it fails you. Needless to say my time to eat breakfast and put makeup on went out the window because I had to give him a bath. Luckily he loves his baths, and today was no exception. Thankfully we temporarily moved into my mother-in-law's house, which also happens to be daycare, otherwise we wouldn't had made it today. -Amanda

Poor baby and by that I mean both of you, he's in great hands with Marsha though.

May 31, 2015- I vented Ethan this morning at 11:30am and green bio came up. I collected it and put it in a vial. We went to TGH's emergency room right away. They took us back very quickly and saw a few doctors after not too long. They mostly just asked us a lot of questions. Then went to read the giant NICU book Shands had put together of all of the stuff one must know about Ethan. The doctor then came and talked to us again which Ethan was then sent for an X-ray. Once we were back, we waited some more. Then after more questions and then more waiting they came and talked to us. They had several radiologists take a look at his X-ray and they all said they didn't see anything. We are to tell his doctors the next time we see them and to keep an eye out for these things again, but for today, he is ok. He is back at home and doing great. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan gained 7ozs in a week again and is now 10lbs 5ozs! I wish I could say it's because he's doing such a great job with his oral feeds, but I can't say that. If it wasn't for his gtube, he wouldn't get the food his body needs to thrive. He now knows the difference between his pacifier and his bottle, and mostly just demands his pacifier. He has started to bring toys to his mouth and suck on them. He's gotten better and better with holding his head up and is now working on sitting up straight. We took him in the pool for the first time on Memorial Day/My Brother's 16th Birthday. He liked it as long as I was holding him close. Eventually he even got his feet out from me and was kicking. I'm not sure why he decided to kick but he seemed very content in doing so. We are looking forward to Saturday! Hope to see you for Ethan's Welcome Home Party. -Amanda

Sounds wonderful! Actually it is very natural for babies to want to swim. It comes naturally from being in water the first phase of life. U should ck out some of the babies swimming on You Tube. astonishing stuff. Happy belated b-day Christofer Barnes!

You are invited to Ethan's Welcome Home Party! It will be on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 1-5pm at The Wyatt Residence. We are eager to see everyone and are so excited to personally introduce you to our son Ethan. This is an open house style party where you can just drop in and leave as you see fit. There will be light refreshments for your enjoyment. No gifts are necessary. We really just want to have this time to visit with you. If however you just have to, we're registered at BuyBuy Baby, and he's in need of size 6 months and up clothes. Ethan is very susceptible to sickness, so we ask that you arrange a separate time to come over if you are sick, have been around anyone who has been sick within the days leading up to the party, or is experiencing allergy symptoms. The smallest bad germ could hospitalize him even if it seems like it's just a little cold to us. If you need our address, please contact us or one of our family members. We look forward to seeing you soon!

This is one of those days we have all prayed for. Thank God for this blessing and miracle. 💚💚💚

May 16, 2015- Ethan is three months old today! Biggest change is that he's home and not in the hospital! He likes being held upright and patted on his back, enjoys being positioned upright to look out and see the world around him, batting his toys on his activity mat, sitting in his swing, gliding in our chair, smiling when you say he's cute, taking baths, and sucking his fist and pacifier. He doesn't like dirty diapers, his pacifier falling out of his mouth, or gas in his stomach. He can hold his head up, take a bottle, giggle, inch his way around his activity mat, and pass gas (funny as it may be this is quite an accomplishment for him). His eye color is still blue and his hair color is to be determined (strawberry blonde, red, blonde, and light brown are all possibilities at the moment). He's our precious little boy who's getting bigger and stronger every day. We are amazed and even more in love. -Amanda and Chris

Such an amazing testimony tonthe "power of prayer". He looks like is on track. And loving life & his family. This is just how it should be! OUR ADOPTION PROCESS, was a 2 yr struggle. Many said "give up"! How can u give up on a dream you know God gave you? Never! Looking back, we rarely remember all those hurdles. Yes, it was worth it all, Yes Eathan was worth it all. Maybe Eathan will be a "pole vaulter"?? It is track season lol hugs

May 16, 2015- Ethan attended his first birthday party at the Florida Aquarium for Arabella who turned one today. He simply had the best time. He loved looking at all the fishes! At least, I'm pretty sure that's what he was looking at. His favorite I think had to be the African penguins which swam right up against the glass and followed Ethan as we walked. The fact that they were black and white probably made them easier to see too. He also got to hang out with his second cousin Cooper. Ethan stared at him for much of the time watching his every move. We were so excited to get our three munchkins together as these are some of our bestest friends in which Chris calls his brothers. It was so refreshing to be able to go to our friends' child's birthday party with our son. This is something we've only been able to dream about before. Now we are looking forward to the years to come watching these three grow up together just as their fathers did. -Amanda and Chris

May 13, 2015- Chris and I needed to run some errands for Ethan, so today Ethan went to daycare at his grandma's house for a few hours! First time at daycare and he did great! Surprisingly we did great too. We are so blessed to have Ethan's grandma Marsha to watch him for us to give us a few hours to do things. It was odd sitting in the front seat with my husband as now one of us sits next to the baby when we go somewhere. It's crazy how some things can become odd so quickly. -Amanda and Chris

Yes it is! Amazingly enough it odd how quickly wer are willing to take the "back" seat for our kids...18+years or more!

I have spent a life time caring for children some in my famy many not in our family, I always hoped and prayed for the day I would be able to care for my child's child. I am honored to be able to care for Ethan. Thanks for the opportunity am I am looking forward to many more💚💚💚

May 11-15, 2015- Monday we feel Ethan turned another corner. He began to not cry instantly every time his diaper was dirty. His eating got better each day. On Tuesday, he began holding his head up for long periods of time! He is learning to wiggle-move up or around on his mat when lying on his back. He wants to be in the upright position as much as he can. He can see further away now. He loves to look around and observe his environment. His eyes get big taking it all in. It's like I can see his little brain working. His favorite position is still to be held upright with his back patted on our chest. He likes his bath time. He insists the water run; he loves putting his hand under the water and thinks it's funny to look at himself in the mirror while bathing. He's found his ears lol. At his doctor appointment, he grew 3/4in in two weeks and gained 7ozs in a week. He surpassed his daily goals for eating! He now weighs 9lbs14ozs and is 23 3/4in long. He's amazing! -Amanda and Chris

May 10, 2015- Happy Mother's Day! Today was my first Mother's Day that I got to celebrate with my son Ethan. In years past, this day was extremely difficult for me as I'd spend much of the day grieving the loss of our first child and the loss of not being the mother I'd envisioned to be. Today was a different day. Today was a new Mother's Day. Today I was overwhelmed with being able to celebrate such an amazing opportunity God has given me to be a new kind of mother, a mother to a CDH survivor. It still hasn't been the motherhood I'd once thought I'd have but it's being the mother I need to be for my son. And today I get to share this very special day with Ethan's grandmothers and great grandmothers whom are amazing and wonderful women in which Ethan already adores. I am so blessed. -Amanda

May 9, 2015- Today Ethan met Dannah! Dannah is my co-worker's daughter who shared the exact same due date as Ethan, February 28, 2015. How funny is that?! She was born just a few days earlier than Ethan. Dee, my co-worker, and I have been through every step of our pregnancies together. This was the first time we got to introduce our children to one another. It's amazing to be able to hold a child you watch grow in her mommy's tummy. Meeting Dannah also put in perspective milestones Ethan isn't doing yet and helped me see how much his time in the NICU did take a toll on him. Ethan is so amazing to be where he is today. He's already improved tremendously in the first week he's been home. He can wiggle his body a quarter turn. If you put him on his side, he can roll to his back. He plays with his toys intentionally. He's just thriving! -Amanda and Chris

May 8, 2015- Ethan gained 2ozs when we took him to his doctor appointment! It's a perfect weight gain! Phew...the first week didn't go so bad after-all. He visited his grandma at school as an early Mother's Day present. When we walked in the door and surprised her, my mom was so happy she nearly cried. Her students have been hearing about Ethan's journey all year. Our plan was to skype with her class to meet Ethan, but we decided to come in person instead. After the initial shock and paparazzi, her class read to him while we were there (school must go on) which he rather enjoyed. The kids did a great job respecting the no touch Ethan, me, or his belongings policy. They were so excited to see him, and Ethan loved seeing them. Then we finished the day with his second cousin's birthday dinner. It was a long day and wore us all out! -Amanda and Chris

May 7, 2015- We went to the grocery store for the first time since being home. It was so wonderful to be able to get out of the house as a family. Ethan loves riding in the car and being in his stroller. He does a lot of staring out the window looking at the scenery and sleeping in his car seat. Today he finally fit into his first pair of shoes. (For weeks, I kept trying them on him hoping they would fit.) It's very fitting as today marks 1 week from being discharged from the hospital! We've all survived (even if we both are very sleep deprived), and Ethan is kicking some serious CDH bootee! -Amanda and Chris

May 6, 2015- Ethan went on his first stroll today to his Aunt Alex's house. We went and checked out his cousin-to-be's nursery to hear about her big plans for the space. It was great to finally use our community's wide sidewalks to push a stroller and still have space for someone to walk next to you. This was one of the pros for moving to this community and now I get to fully take advantage for it. -Amanda and Chris

May 5, 2015- Ethan had his first bath today upstairs in his own bathroom (he only had water/soap wipe down baths in the hospital). He wasn't sure about the bath at first but soon grew to like it. It was cute seeing him completely undressed. He looks much smaller without his diaper on. Then it was time to dry off...umm nope...he really didn't like that. Then we dressed him in his alligator onesie and carried him and his oxygen to his nursery. This was a moment I've been looking forward to for some time. I got to hold my baby in his nursery. We built this house to grow our family. Finally we have a baby home to fill our house. -Amanda and Chris

So happy for you. Ethan is absolutely adorable and I can hardly wait to meet him. I am so glad things are going so well now that you are home. It will take a little time, but soon you will have a routine. Love and kisses to all of you.

May 4, 2015- Today Ethan had many visitors. Our family had the same idea to let us settle in Friday and Saturday and not visit. Then once Sunday came, everyone decided they had waited long enough and the entire day we had visitors. Ethan likes being entertained by the multiple but it wears him out. Needless to say he slept very well that night; we all did. The picture shows his "Pap" holding him for the first time. (That's my dad.) His grandparents are so excited he's home. At least one of them comes to visit every day. They use the line "we were just in the neighborhood heading to (insert store name) and figured we stop by". I'm pretty sure they just go to the store so they can be in the neighborhood to stop by. Who could blame them. I'm sure many of you would like to come meet Ethan in person too; we'd like for that as well. We will be having a Welcome Home Baby Ethan Party in the coming weeks that you will be invited to. Stay tuned for more details. -Amanda and Chris

May 3, 2015- Ethan met Chloe today. Chloe is our puppy dog. We've been bringing Ethan's dirty clothes back to the apartment for Chloe to smell for 10 weeks. The first time Chloe took a whiff, her little tail would start wagging and she would look up at me very excitedly. Today was the same. We had to hold her back from giving Ethan kisses which was hard to deny her. She loves Ethan already. She guards him all the time now. She always knows where he is and will check on him periodically but never go too close. One time he coughed and she immediately got up to see what was the matter. I was curious to see what she would do, but he stopped coughing before she got to him. She's become more patient lately as well and significantly calmer. She grew up today. Ethan played on his activity mat today for the first time. We showed him how he could make the toys move. Before long he had his toys just a movin and a shakin. Today was a great day. -Amanda and Chris

Such a cutie

May 2, 2015- Ethan had his first outing today to the pediatrician. He did ok. He wasn't a fan of being striped down to his diaper and having to lie on the table to be examined. They took his weight and height. He gained 7 ounces and 1 whole inch in one day! Ha. I made them measure twice. The hospital and pediatrics office must measure very differently because there's no way he grew that much in a day. So he's somewhere between 8lbs 14ozs and 9lbs 5ozs and either 22in or 23in long. Curious to see what he'll be next time. His home oxygen was also delivered today. Interesting contraption I must say. Very happy to have it though. It is so much easier to get around the house now than trying to push the tank around while carrying the baby. This should make middle of the night diaper changes less complicated. We also had a family outing to Buy Buy Baby which he slept the whole way there, during, and on the way home. Hoping our second night is better than the first. -Amanda and Chris

Way to go Mom & Dad. Ehtan will keep you on your toes! :)

May 1, 2015- It was exactly three months that we were in Gainesville for the birth of our son. Now it's May, a new month, a fresh start and change of scenery. The night was mostly good. It started good when we all were able to fall asleep. It helps having our snoza (a little devise that clips on their diaper to monitor their movement and if it doesn't feel a movement after a certain amount of time it will vibrate to get the baby to move and alarm for the parents to know); it gives us a peace of mind so we can sleep. Everything was good until Ethan pooped. He hates to stay in a dirty diaper. I tried to change him as fast as I could, but I couldn't be quick enough for him. To change his diaper there are so many steps therefore Ethan had a level 10 fit before I could finish. I was a little frazzled because there are just too many steps right now. I knew things had to change for the next night. -Amanda and Chris

April 30, 2015- We are home. Dad, Mom, and Baby Ethan are home together. We weren't sure this day would ever come, but here it is and on the last day of CDH awareness month. When we walked into our house, everything was in its place and ohh so clean! Our family did an amazing job cleaning and unpacking for us. My mom brought over dinner, yummy homemade enchiladas, and the new grandmothers and aunts took turns holding Ethan for the first time. It's been such a long wait; it was finally their turn. Once everyone had left, Chris got Ethan's equipment set up for the night while I prepared his milk. Chris did great; I did fairly well. I read the hospital instructions on how to fortify milk and what they gave me was how to make a formula bottle...not the same thing...not even close. Thank goodness for his nurse who answered my frantic call on his personal cell. Really...these nurses rock. He calmed me down and helped me out. Phew. And then the night began. -Amanda and Chris

Our son, Ethan Christopher Wyatt, whom was born on February 16, 2015 at 2:10pm weighing 7lbs 3oz and 21 inches long with a left congenital diaphragmatic hernia where his stomach, spline, small and large intestines, and 30% of his liver were in his chest cavity due to only having 5% of his left diaphragm whom was given a 75% survival rate from Dr. Kays and 40% survival rate from other hospitals, is on his way home today. Today is a beautiful day. The words "thank you" or the giant hug I gave him will never be enough for Dr. Kays and his team but that is all I have to give right now. So Thank you. Thank you for never giving up, for all the hours of sleep you lost, for giving up moments in your life for my son to have the best chance at life possible, for dedicating your life to save my son. Today we get to finally bring home our beautiful baby boy. We can start a new chapter of our life. Today I am overwhelmingly thankful and blessed that today has finally come. Prayers have been answered, and God has given us a child whom he healed. Now we have a great responsibility of raising our tiny miracle. My cup runneth over. -Amanda and Chris

April 28, 2015- Ethan got his immunizations. We learned infant CPR this morning, which I never want to have to use, but if it comes down to it, I feel comfortable performing CPR on baby Ethan. We had more gtube training. We had our last pizza lunch from Dominos and The March of Dimes. They have been providing the NICU families lunch every Tuesday which has been a wonderful blessing. Ethan's home milk pump was delivered at bedside, and we got trained on how to use it. We used our system for his feeds last night so we feel very comfortable with it. We had bottle feeding training with his Occupational Therapist. Our days are long, but we want to be as prepared as possible. We've gotten to say goodbye to several of Ethan's nurses as they aren't scheduled to work again before we'll hopefully be gone. We've made great friends with several of the other NICU parents. We all went out to dinner last night and ate together for the last time. -Amanda and Chris

April 27, 2015- Ethan had a great day. Dr. Kays weaned his oxygen down a little but Ethan will definitely be going home on oxygen. He's weaning him off some of his medications as well. He'd like to keep him here until Thursday to give him time to wean him from his medications. He said plan to take him home on Thursday. We've learned that these "dates" are very subjective and anything could happen. We had his oxygen training today which went well. Check. The occupational therapist came by and taught us ways to help him with movement...felt more like play time...fun fun. She also worked with us on some great feeding tips. Check. We are very excited to be checking more things off his discharge list. He's doing great! We love when Dr. Kays comes by now. He's so proud of Ethan. It's written all over his face. It's great to see him smiling because of my son. (He's grown out of newborn clothes but not quite fitting into 0-3 months so his outfit is big.) -Amanda and Chris

April 26, 2015- Today was a growing and eating type of day. He continues to eat more and more each day orally. He gets tired during feedings and has to pause for naps. It's a lot of work for him to eat. So we feed him when he wants to eat just as his doctor ordered. We've gotten lots of practice this weekend with his gtube and are more and more comfortable with it. Something must have sank in from all of my learning on Friday. We are patiently waiting to take him home. Still need to check off some more discharge items from our list this week, but the list is dwindling. The thought of actually being able to be parents outside of a hospital is becoming more and more like a reality. Anxiously Waiting, Amanda and Chris

April 23, 2015- I cried today. Happy tears filled my face when the Discharge Nurse came over to talk to me about setting up a time for her to teach us how to take care of him at home. I also worked with her and our insurance company on getting his medical equipment for when we go home. It was a quick visit, but after she left, I looked down at my happy baby boy and the tears just started coming. We are going to go home! We get to leave the hospital with our son! I am so overjoyed. My heart is filled with so much happiness. For years, my heart has been deprived of such joy. Discharging babies takes a lot of time; it's not like discharging me where they said ok you can go home, read a prescription to me, and off I went. Ethan must get many tests done. He got several today including an echocardiogram, chest X-ray, and hearing test. He passed his hearing test! We will have to wait to hear from Dr. Kays about the other tests. May the glory be to God. -Amanda and Chris

April 23, 2015- Today was Ethan's Easter. He wasn't feeling well on Easter so we didn't get to do those fun Easter things with him. I considered returning his outfit but then I stopped myself. Why!? What for? We do everything else on Ethan's time so why not this too. He should still have his first Easter even if it's not actually Easter Day. He got a Peter Rabbit bunny chew toy and his cute Easter outfit. I read to him the classic Guess How Much I love You book. He really likes being read to, and he enjoys looking at the different pages. He also received an Easter pail from his Grandma that was filled with 2 new outfits, socks, and booties. He's so excited to wear his new clothes! April 22, 2015- Dr. Kays came by and changed Ethan's feeds today. He's allowing Ethan to eat as much as he wants during the day. Whatever he doesn't eat, he'll get in his gtube continuously overnight. He was only being ordered 15ml every three hours, but on his first feed where he could eat as much as he wanted, he took 35ml! His next feed he took 29ml and etc. He's doing great with his eating now. It seems to have clicked and he's on a roll. Dr. Kays also said that he believes the kink or partial obstruction in his small intestine has cleared on its own which means he wouldn't have to go through another surgery! He's doing great and is a happy baby. 😃 -Amanda and Chris

April 21, 2015- Ethan is progressing with his eating. He's beginning to grasp the concept of the bottle and the whole swallow while breathing task we all take for granted. He started eating for me by bottle today when I fed him as before he would only eat for the nurses. We are getting there. We are not so fortunate with breastfeeding yet; we just need more time and more practice. But what I prefer isn't what is important. What's important is that he's learning to eat orally! Who cares what it's coming out of. He's eating!!! And either way it's my breastmilk. He's got an entire stock of breastmilk in the freezer that I've been pumping over these last 2 months, so he's got to learn to eat by bottle. I wasn't pumping for fun. To date, I have had 355 pump sessions, and I have spent a collective total of 6 days 13 hours and 51 minutes hooked up to a pump machine. (Yeah there's an app for that.) -Amanda and Chris

Oh yay!! I love it!!! What a wonderful experience! Keep up the good work pumping!! So proud of you!

Today is April 19. April is CDH awareness month. And today is CDH action day! You have been witnessing our CDH experience for many many months. You have read update after update. You have prayed. You have donated. You have sent cards and care packages. You are amazing friends. Today I urge you to share Ethan's story with others so they may be aware of what CDH is as the information may be very valuable to them at some point in their life. Please share with them that there is hope for these babies. They can live. My son Ethan is a CDH survivor thanks to God, Dr. Ruis, you, and Dr. Kays' team at Shands at UF Children's Hospital. Now I ask you to share how you have been touched by Ethan's CDH experience. Some of you have personally shared with me how Ethan has brought awareness to your family, but I encourage you to share your stories in a comment for everyone to hear. -Amanda

Charges and I hang onto every update and usually come back to it more than one to read and re-read it. This experience has opened our eyes to a condition that is much more common than I first thought. We're so happy that Ethan has gotten the best care possibly from Dr. Kay's and the whole crew at Shands and even more happy that he will continue to receive such great care by 2 of the greatest people to walk this Earth when he finally gets to go home. We love yall! Xoxo

April 19, 2015- Ethan ate last night for the nurse!!! 15ml the first time. 8ml the second time. And nothing the third time. He's very curious about it but still just trying to figure out what to do. He'll get it. He's breathing great! His hair is starting to come back in. (Did you know that hair growth has a lot to do with how much oxygen the body is getting. My new thought as to maybe why Chris went bald so early in life is because of lack of oxygen due to his asthma...just a thought.)! -Amanda and Chris

All GREAT NEWS. Making us the happiest grandma and grandpa in town 💚💚💚🙏

April 18, 2015- Yesterday Ethan went from 20 ml to 22ml an hour on his feeds and 2 liters on the high flow. He did great! BUT Today Dr. Kays moved Ethan from the high flow to the wall oxygen!!!! Then he got to wear clothes again! And then after a few hours of him doing great, he got to try oral feeds. He doesn't quite get the concept yet, but all in all they've been good sessions. He's doing really well! -Amanda and Chris

April 16, 2015- Today Ethan turned 2 months old! We are so blessed to have him in our lives. We have always been blessed to have known him. We never knew we would have this much time with him. We are so blessed. Ethan had a great day today! They took him off CPAP and he's now on the high flow! He did so well, within hours he was already weaned down a setting. His body hasn't even noticed the change all day. His breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure have stayed the same! He's doing awesome! They also increased his feeds from 15ml to 20ml an hour. He has finished his antibiotics. He no longer has an IV. He loves his bouncy seat and pacifier and being held. They are monitoring him closely to see if he shows signs of his kink unkinking or still being there; only time will tell. He has his days and nights mixed up so the nurses are working with him on that. He got socks today because his feet were cold!!! Today was a great day! -Amanda and Chris

Keep it up Ethan 🎉🎉

Yesterday we had a low key non medically exciting day. A day Ethan got to be Ethan and mommy got to enjoy being his mommy. He was introduced to a new crib toy which he loves. It plays music and lights up. He was mesmerized. I got to hold him for long periods of time just rocking him. He was just happy. He practiced smiling. He's been so sick and not feeling well for weeks that I haven't seen him smile in awhile. His antibiotics must be working because he just got to be a baby. He cried only about normal baby things like his pacifier falling out of his mouth and needing help getting it back in. I know we have a long way to go still but it's days like this when I just want to do these things at home with him. He feels so normal but the truth is he's still very sick. The time is really wearing on us, but if it's just time he needs, we can give him that. We've waited a long time for him. What's a little longer. -Amanda & Chris

Praying

Calyn Smith — 9 years ago

Go mommy go! You can do it! Praying for strength and rest for you all this week!

Ethan has a kink, or partial obstruction, in his small intestines. Kays is going to try to let Ethan figure it out on his own before resorting to surgery. He wants to start feeds back in a few days to see how he tolerates it. His antibiotics already seem to be helping. He has been able to sleep with a blanket for the afternoon without an increase in his temperature. So when they did the test today in the OR they found that the fluid would flow just fine. Then it would stop at the kink where only a little would get by. When he was getting continuous feeds it would just slowly trickle all day. But when they moved him to intermittent feeds, they gave him more over a shorter amount of time. So slowly his body hasn't been able to accept all of this food in these shorter time frames. It all makes sense now. I feel at ease now because we know what is wrong so they can treat it. -Amanda and Chris

Little Ethan is growing & getting restless with his situation! We can see an "energetic" little boy here. One who needs to be set free to roll, toss toys & look outside at what soon will be his playground!

Marie Santiago — 9 years ago

Yes, Father continue to heal our Ethan! He is looking great but needs an "intestinal" touch Lord!

Robin Garcia — 9 years ago

Thank you father GOD for answers please heal Ethan. Amen

Ethan is still on the CPAP; no change there. They have continued to do tests on him all week trying to figure out what's going on with his temperature. A test came back this morning showing he has an infection somewhere. They ran another test to help better find out where the infection may be. It is looking like some sort of intestine problem. This morning he began to stop digesting his food so they stopped his feeds, and he is now back to a scalp IV which Ethan tries to pull out. Therefore he has a little blue bear they keep over it to prevent him from getting his hand up there to pull it out. Surprisingly though his heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and temperature are doing better even though something's not right with his intestines. Thank goodness for a staff that cares and is so attentive with his care. -Amanda and Chris

There hasn't been much change with Ethan. He's still on the CPAP machine. He's still "running hot" and can't wear clothes. He still likes his pacifier. His feeds have changed from continuous to "intermittent" (my word for it) which is a step in the right direction. Intermittent feeds are where he gets a continuous drip for x amount of time and then no feeds for x amount of time. This is the stage between continuous and bolus feeds. He has to get his breathing down before he can move forward in other areas. So we stand still in hopes that his little lung can keep growing stronger to help him breathe easier. -Amanda & Chris

He is looking healthier in every picture! He looks great here!

Today, April 2, was the birth and death of our dear sweet baby Elijah. He would have been two today. My pregnancy with Ethan has brought back many memories of Elijah. Many moments I was prepared for but many I was caught off guard by. One moment in particular, had me in tears at Ethan's bedside. For weeks, I had been watching the other NICU parents bring in their new babies' older siblings to meet them. I just thought ohh how cute, how sweet, how precious those moments were. One day, I was watching this little boy get settled into his chair to meet his new baby sister. It was that moment I stared into the empty space across from me and envisioned an almost two year old boy, Elijah, settling into his chair to meet his brother for the first time. And that's when I lost it. Ethan was never going to meet his older brother, not ever in that same way. I know that one day, we'll all be together as a family and ohh what a happy day that will be. -Amanda

Keeping you in my thoughts & prayers. Just know that is always with you in the form of Ethan's Guardian Angel. <3

Ethan went back on CPAP Monday morning. Sunday morning Dr. Kays turned down the high flow. Then he had to turn it back up by early evening because Ethan was doing worse. Over night, Ethan continued to struggle, so he was moved to CPAP Monday morning. He continues to remain on CPAP. Monday afternoon he took his pacifier for 40 minutes solid! Yesterday he only cried when his diaper needed changing or his pacifier had fallen out of his mouth. He's been struggling with his sleep. He is "running hot" but no fever so wearing clothes has been postponed until his temperature gets better. Sunday Ethan's IV went out so now he's off of the precedex. His feeds have been increased because he's been loosing weight. Even though Ethan's been feeling worse, he's learned to play with a toy his daddy bought for him. He reaches up and bats his hand until it rattles and makes the octopus move. Adorable! -Amanda and Chris

Baby Ethan is moving right along. Dr. Kays said he's successfully been extubated. He's doing better with his breathing and being weaned from his CPAP machine. He's off the versed (sedative medicine). He's continuing to be weaned from his other medications as well. Today he learned how to suck on his pacifier which is completely adorable! We caught him smiling a time or two but we weren't fast enough with the camera. AND he got his first bath today! He's also staying awake longer and is a flirt with the ladies. The nurses think he's really cute, so he gets quite spoiled with their attention. We are so happy he's doing so well. It truly is amazing. -Amanda and Chris

It's Dad's turn! Chris got to hold his son last night. I got to sit next to them and watch. I'm in love. I always knew Chris would be an amazing father; now I got to see it. He was nervous and excited the whole time. I told him don't you think that's how most new dads feel? Ethan was so peaceful and content in his daddy's arms, so happy. The two of them together is something I can't seem to get enough of. I'd say yesterday was the best day of Ethan's life. He got to be held by his mommy and his daddy for the first time. His breathing is getting better. His pick line came out. They upped his feeds again. And his poops are getting more and more yellow! I'd say he's doing great! He has many more milestones still to cross but he keeps edging towards the finish line. -Amanda and Chris

Beautiful pictures praising God for is love

It's been a really LONG wait. 34 days plus 38 weeks 2 days. But finally the wait is over. I got to hold my beautiful baby boy in my arms today. Tears of joy streamed down my face. It was a moment I've been waiting for before I even knew Ethan. I came into the NICU this morning to Ethan being extremely mad. His heart rate and blood pressure were dangerously bad. He was having extreme difficulty breathing. They had tried all the tricks in the book except for letting mom hold him. And so within minutes he was in my arms. His heart rate and blood pressure immediately got better and better and better. He was so happy. He loves being in my arms. The nurse hadn't even finished settling me into the rocker before he was asleep. I held him for 3.5 hours. Then he got fussy because he needed his diaper changed. What an amazing morning to be able to be the one to soothe him, to be the person he can't live without, to give him something no medicine or machine could. I'm on cloud nine. -Amanda

Yesterday, Ethan lost his Lipids because he's getting enough fat through my breast milk! His TPN is gone. And he went up on his feeds to 16ml/hr. Today, Ethan got extubated and learned to cry! His voice is still very raspy from having had a tube between his vocal cords for over 4 weeks. He's learning how to breath on his own. He's having difficulty keeping calm. Dr. Kays came and sat at Ethan's bedside for 3 hours this afternoon. His dedication continues to amaze me. Ethan is finally calm and resting. Today was a hard day. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan has been able to be weaned quite a lot from his ventilator settings and medications. He is handling his feeds well and they continue to increase which is finally moving us away from black tar poops to lovely green poops. His first green poop was on St. Patrick's Day; I found that very fitting. Yesterday I was able to pick him up again so his bedding could be changed. And for the first time he got to sleep on his own non-hospital bed linens. I chose the shark bedding for Chris' birthday. When Chris went to see Ethan today, he was very surprised to find a birthday card for him in Ethan's bassinet on top of his awesome shark bedding. Ethan already loves his daddy very much. Today was a good day. -Amanda and Chris

Go Ethan!! Go Ethan!!🏇🏁🏆

Today Ethan is 4 weeks old! He finally was able to wear a hat yesterday!!! But today he's back to no hat because he's back to the scalp IV (which was just taken out so recently that I haven't been able to update that it was even out). Just when I feel like stuff is being taken away, I'm quickly reminded that it's not for long. Chris took in Ethan's first bag of laundry today which included blankets, socks, mittens, and hats. Great news is that I got to do baby laundry! Ethan's progress is still moving at a snails pace...even more slower lately...hence the days between updates. But Ethan lost his catheter again today. He's been weaned off the ventilator a little more. And he got his first feeding through his g-tube today! Exciting but weird. The whole g-tube thing is so necessary but so not how I envisioned my baby to eat. All in all today was good. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan is still recovering from surgery. He's just resting a lot. He started feeling a little better last night and was awake and content. He's so cute! It's hard not to just smoother him with kisses. He is still at the higher settings on his machines and medicines as Dr. Kays just wants him to rest and take it easy before he starts weaning him off them. He did have to get a catheter put in because he wasn't peeing hours after he was out of surgery. His little arm is strapped to a foam board because he was starting to pinch his pick line and they didn't want him to put a kink in the line. The foam board prevents that. Ethan also got a lovely hanging apparatus for his g-tube which is what they'll use to feed him once they start that. And Ethan is wearing socks his daddy bought for him. :) He has started kicking his socks off now too which is quite cute. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan is ok. We've had a long day. Dr. Kays saw air on his X-ray this morning where it shouldn't be. He did an immediate exploratory surgery to see why the air was there. He inserted another chest tube. He then decided to go ahead and do Ethan's acid reflux surgery while Ethan was already in surgery which is normally done a little later in the process. Ethan also got a g-tube put in today to start his feedings. Ethan is now back on higher settings with his medications and machines, and he will have to start being weaned from them again. Dr. Kays is happy with how the surgery went and did not see anything concerning. Ethan is still moving in the right direction! -Amanda and Chris

Ethan has continued to do a little bit better these last three days. Today he got completely weaned off the Nitric Oxide! He's taking things slow but steady. Last night was a very special moment for father and son. Chris went up to the NICU to check on him. For three hours, Ethan was awake, laying there wide eyed and staring at his daddy. He's never been this awake let alone for more than a few minutes. He even was moving his legs and arms too. He wasn't mad or fussy just content. We've never seen him like this before. It was amazing and exciting and then concerning...is he ok? Should he be this awake? Turns out he is ok. I'm looking to go back tonight in hopes he'll be awake for me too. Ethan still has a long ways to go, but we are headed in the right direction. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan continued to have a good day yesterday and today keeping stable. Dr. Kays had his chest tube changed out again last night as a preemptive measure. Since Ethan was doing so well this time last week but then started doing so poorly, Dr. Kays is taking things much slower this time around. They say slow and steady wins the race. Therefore, he is very very slowly weaning Ethan off his medications and supporting machines. So far Ethan has reacted much better to the very very slow method. :) The most exciting news is that I got to help with changing Ethan's bed sheets by lifting him up (for the first time!) and before I put him back down I got to kiss him (for the first time)!!!!! It's really exciting when we get to help out in these small ways. -Amanda and Chris

Dr. Kays came in and replaced his chest tube this morning. They were able to get out more than 30ml of fluid. Ethan's been much more comfortable today and having a better day than yesterday and the past few days. That's great news! -Chris & Amanda

YAY! This is great news, glad Ethan is more comfortable. Keeping you all in my thoughts & prayers.

We've been on a roller coaster these past few days with Ethan's health. Fri: His folly catheter came out! Sat: One of his chest tubes was taken out. He got a feeding tube in which he got his first dose of mommy's milk at 4:20pm. He got a little blue bear as his new companion. Then at 6:30pm he threw up for the first time. His heart rate jumped to 209. He was crashing. It turned out that his chest tube was clogged. Once they cleaned it out, 20ml of fluid came out. Then Ethan began improving. Sun: In the morning, Dr. Kays removed his feeding tube. He got turned over on his stomach to help him breathe easier...of course he started crashing. Dr. Kays adjusted the machines, and then Ethan stabilized. That night, the nurse turned his head. Ethan started crashing. He stabilized after his head was turned back and more of his machines were adjusted. Today: He's 2 weeks old! He got a bigger ventilator tube. It's taken Ethan most of the day to calm down. -Amanda & Chris

Awesome news!! Go Ironman Go!!!!

Ethan's had a great first day being off ECMO. He's tolerating everything very well. The bleeding in his chest cavity has slowed/stopped because his blood is clotting now that he's off ECMO. Everything is as it should be. Now we just wait and give Ethan time to recover. The biggest things are behind us now. The next big thing will be getting him off the ventilator, but this will take many weeks. Then there will be feeding which will bring its own set of problems. We are a long ways from any of this so for now we wait. I will update as often as there is news. Other than that you may not hear from me everyday but don't worry. If you don't hear from me, things are stable. I will let you know if things change. Thank you so much for your many prayers. Thank you so much for your contributions. Thank you so much for your support. -Amanda and Chris

Wonderful news!

Monday Ethan started bleeding in his chest cavity, a complication from his repair surgery. The bleeding won't stop while being on ECMO due to the blood thinners he has to be on while on ECMO. These past few days, Dr. Kays has been making adjustments to Ethan's care by weaning him off ECMO. He tolerated the changes very well. Yesterday at 1:31pm, Ethan got taken off of ECMO. This is of course sooner than expected. As of now, he is tolerating being off of ECMO very well. This is great news! -Amanda and Chris

Go Ethan Go...my heart leaps when I see your photo.. Ive been a fighter all my life.. YOU CAN DO THIS.. GOD HAS THIS!! johnnyflyrod

Ethan's care (4): Ethan's surgery was especially scary because it was preformed while he was on ECMO. He had to be put on ECMO earlier than anticipated because he crashed much sooner than they expected. He didn't even make it 12 hours on his own. ECMO is a machine that provides extra support by assisting his heart and lungs in adding oxygen to the blood and removing carbon dioxide just like your lungs do. They can also control how fast it moves blood very similar to the heart. It's similar to an adult's heart and lung bypass machine but differs because Ethan still does some of the work. He is also on a ventilator that takes breaths for him. These machines are essentially his life support as if he was not on them he would die in a few short hours. His recovery time is slow as they are helping him to grow his underdeveloped lung and a lung doesn't just grow over night. He needs to get stronger before he can come off of ECMO. He's expected to be on ECMO for 3 weeks. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan's care (3): I'd thought I'd take a moment to talk about Ethan's care hopefully it will help answer questions many of you have. Ethan is a very sick little boy. He was born with his stomach, spline, small and large intestines, and 30% of his liver up in his chest cavity because 95% of his diaphragm was missing. Your diaphragm is what keeps those organs down out of the chest cavity. Lungs fully develop later during pregnancy which creates the cavity for these organs to go to and prevents the left lung from developing. So Ethan's left lung is very underdeveloped. He's now had a repair surgery where Dr. Kays moved his organs down to the right places and made him 95% of a diaphragm. Ethan's particular situation is one that Dr. Kays has never seen in all of his 300 cases as this is the most missing diaphragm he's ever had. Ethan's case is very severe. -Amanda and Chris

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. How amazing that Medicine has come this far that miracles like this can happen.

Ethan's care (2): I'd thought I'd take a moment to talk about Ethan's care hopefully it will help answer questions many of you have. Ethan has one nurse 24/7 attending to just him and one ECMO specialist attending to just his ECMO machine 24/7. So he's a 2/1 patient. Every one of his nurses and specialist are amazing! They have the best bedside manors. They are great at answering any questions we or our visitors have about Ethan or his equipment. I call them NICU mommies and daddies. I've been so impressed by each of them. Ethan is in the best hands he could possibly be in. We are so blessed. I find the words thank you coming from my mouth often but it seems so insufficient as these are the people who have and are saving my son's life and two little words can't possibly express how I truly feel. But with each of them when I say thank you, they know what I mean. I can see it in their eyes. We are so thankful. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan's care (1): I'd thought I'd take a moment to talk about Ethan's care hopefully it will help answer questions many of you have. He's at the world's best hospital for CDH babies: Shands at UF in Gainesville, FL. It makes it the best because of Dr. Kays and his team. He's an amazing doctor who's dedicated his life to CDH babies. His determination for every CDH baby to survive is outstanding. He's on call 24/7 and has already had many sleepless nights due to our little Ethan. He pushes the envelope when it comes to doing whatever it takes for these babies. He takes calculated risks other doctors wouldn't dream of. He hates to fail. He loves watching the homemade videos and seeing pictures of his success stories; this is about the only time you see him in pure happiness and joy. We are so blessed. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan got to wear mittens for the first time today! Like most newborns, Ethan wants to have his hands up by his face. But then he starts causing trouble because he likes to grab his tubes and pull...naughty boy. So they asked us to bring in mittens to prevent him from being able to cause trouble. And I said ummm mittens yeah I can bring in mittens ☺️ Daddy says his socks are girly but mommy thinks he's a trendy baby. I've got a yellow hat for this look too...just waiting for the green light to put it on him. Love him SO much! These little things that we get to do like change a diaper and put socks and mittens on him make us so happy. It's great to feel like we can do something. It's great to feel like we can help add some comfort to him right now. We love being his parents. We pray it's for a long time. -Amanda and Chris

Ethen looks fantastic! Made in his image!

Ethan is still stable and doing as the doctors expected. We had another exciting day as daddy got to change Ethan's diaper (his first diaper he's ever changed!)! That was a really cool experience. Mommy told daddy now's a good time cause there's not going to be anything in it and he's not squirming all around. To all of our surprise, I was wrong. Ethan made his first poop and it was gross looking. Yay for poop! Poop is a good thing. -Amanda and Chris

Yay for poop! Love you baby Ethan! Summer is going to be so lucky to have such a tough cousin to look out for her! 😘❤️ Keep progressing as you are, I can't wait to see your little baby smiles and even hear your little baby cries. ❤️👶😘

Ethan is continuing to remain stable on ECMO and the ventilator. He is slowly being woken up from being sedated from his surgery and starting to move his arms and feet a little and squint. He's wearing his gator booties! Daddy got to put them on him. The smile on Chris' face was of pure joy. Today I got to change Ethan's diaper! (There was nothing in it cause he's got a catheter in, but it gets changed every 4 hours anyways.) I also got to hold his hands down while his nurses changed his bedding and dressings. We've not been allowed to touch him for the last several days so being able to do this much today was really exciting! When we touch him and talk to him, it causes him to stir and his stats start changing. We are so in love with our new baby boy. He's melted our hearts and given us so much joy. Every moment with him is a blessing and gift from God. -Amanda and Chris

Ethan is quite the fighter. Hes pretty sedated right now but he's stable. He's doing as good as to be expected. He got quite the souvenir from his surgery yesterday...a huge scar! Chris was hoping Dr. Kays would make it look like a shark bite. Sorry Ethan no cool looking shark bite scar for you. I guess you'll just have to make do with the one you've got. Besides mommy thinks it's way cooler anyways...it's the scar that saved your life. It may not seem like much, but Ethan got to start wearing socks today! You'll see him wearing some in the picture provided by his grandma and grandpa Gerard. Slowly we'll get to start doing small things. Today it's that he can wear socks! I'm rejoicing in the little things...SOCKS! -Amanda

Ethan is out of surgery. He did well. His recovery will be a long road. He's a very sick little boy. His situation was even worse than the doctors could have known. It's amazing he's made it this far. He only had about 5% of his diaphragm! The patch they put in was huge; they basically had to build him a diaphragm. It had been explained to us many months ago that because he had a hole in his diaphragm his organs moved up, but it turns out that his organs didn't stand a chance but to go up into his chest cavity because he basically didn't have a diaphragm to keep his organs in place. We are so grateful for Dr. Kays and his team. Ethan did good, but he has a long way to go. He was in desperate need to have his surgery that they preformed his surgery while he was still on ECMO. He will require to be on ECMO and many other life supporting machines for many weeks to come. But we need to take things day by day and today Ethan did good, he's alive, and I'm the most blessed mommy. -Amanda

Ethan's stats came up today as he's been on ECMO and all of his machines. Dr. Kays is talking about doing his repair surgery just trying to decide when; there are lots of dates on the table. We've gotten to see Ethan several times today. I'm getting more familiar around the NICU now...it's a little less scary. Ethan loves to hold my finger when I visit. He grasps it and squeezes every so often and likes to bring my finger close to his chest. He heard my voice today while I was visiting and had to take a peak at me. The picture I've posted shows him looking at me for the first time. I'd like to say I was the first one he did this with but it would be a lie. He's a daddy's boy. Daddy was talking to him even earlier when mommy wasn't there, and Ethan opened an eye to see where that familiar voice was coming from. He knows our voices. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. He's a very sick little boy who's putting up the fight of his life. -Amanda

Baby Ethan is not doing as well as Dr. Kays had hoped. His oxygen levels got extremely low. They used all of their tricks to get his stats up but he was not getting better. At 2:00am we got the call that Dr. Kays was on his way to put him on ECMO. He is now on ECMO. Dr. Kays expects him to be on ECMO for several days. Please pray that he will start getting better. ECMO is his last chance to stabilize him. His precious little body has been fighting so hard in these first few hours of life; he just needs a little help. Chris and I got to visit him again and hold his hand and wish him luck before they started him on ECMO as it might be awhile before we can see him again. He was supposed to have his repair surgery at 6:30am but he wasn't stable enough to make it through the surgery. He will need to have his repair surgery in order to survive, but he needs to become stable first. It's for these possibile situations we came to Shands. Ethan is in the best hands possible. -Amanda

He's still head down and getting ready to arrive. 1 week from today I should go into the hospital to be induced. We're settled into our new home away from home one block away from the hospital. We feel a bit cooped up but are feeling very grateful we have a little more space than the hotel room would have provided and at the same cost. Chloe has adjusted well. She always wants to be outside here. There are so many new smells, people, and other dogs that she doesn't understand why we make her come back inside. It's finally February! I'm now 36 weeks, and Baby Ethan will arrive this month. His targeted birthday is Monday 2/16/15. We are busy packing for our move. Plans changed a little as we are moving tomorrow instead, but we are excited that we get to move straight into the apartment as we were just notified of an opening on Friday evening. Which means our puppy dog Chloe gets to come with us! I'm feeling better now but still not 100%. The doctor said it will most likely be another 2 weeks until I'm all better. Basically right before it's time to deliver, I should be better. As we have been preparing for our move and essentially this next chapter of our lives, we feel so overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness bestowed upon us through the prayers, donations, and gifts. When we started this journey, we had no idea how we would financially afford to have this baby. I'm now 35 weeks along! We'll be having a baby in 3-4 weeks time. We are preparing to move. In just a few days time, we will make our way to Gainesville to give Ethan his best chance possible. Time is getting closer and things are beginning to feel very real. Ethan's news hasn't changed but his mommy has been very sick over these past 7 days. I've had a double ear infection and an upper respiratory infection, so bad so it put me in the hospital Friday night. I now have the right medicine that has already aided me in feeling better, looking forward to being 100% soon. Meanwhile, I have two more days left in the office before I start working remotely. Chris' last day of work is Friday; unfortunately, his job isn't one he could take with him. The worst part about our move will be having to say good bye to our Chloe girl. We can't take her where we are going, not just yet. She'll be with grandpa and grandma, so we know she'll be in good hands. -Amanda

I am now 34 weeks! Time is getting closer as we should deliver between 38-39 weeks. We are wrapping things up in this chapter of our lives, so we can begin the next chapter. We are as ready as we can be, but who is really ready to go through anything like this. Our last doctor appointment revealed that the fetal MRI showed the left side of Ethan's liver up into his chest cavity. We've been praying that this day didn't come but to our dismay it has. The liver could stay only one side up or can continue to completely move up into his chest cavity. The plan remains the same for Ethan even with this change, but it does lessen his odds of survival and most likely will elevate his need for more medical care once he's born and lengthen his NICU stay. We are continuing to pray for strength for this next chapter of our lives and that God may not give us more than we can handle. We are very thankful for each of you for supporting us through prayer and your contributions. -Amanda

Baby Ethan Update from this week: We learned yesterday that part of Ethan's liver has moved up into his chest cavity which is not good news. This lowers his chance of survival but his odds are still good. We've been very aware of this possibility as it is a likely outcome and it has finally just come to pass. The birth plan still stays the same, but his recovery time in the NICU will be longer. The most exciting part about this week was when I got to watch Ethan practice breathing! The doctor said that was a really great sign. The doctor is also very happy with his growth and that he is head down. I feel very blessed to have now made it to 33 weeks! 4 more weeks and he will be full term which is what we need him to make it to for him to have his best chance. Meanwhile we have been keeping the car with no less than a half a tank of gas just in case we have to head to the hospital sooner than we would like. Continue to keep us in your prayers. -Amanda Wyatt, Ethan's mommy

Ethan needs to stay cooking for another 6 weeks to get bigger and stronger. He's now as big as a squash and weighing 4lbs12ozs. He's going to have long legs and arms as he's been in the 80th percentile for his age. Things are moving along as they should. I'm continuing to get bigger and boy do I feel it. He's a very active baby as he never seems to be sleeping. His heart is still severely compressed by his other organs in his chest cavity but is functioning normally. His liver remains down (which is great!). Hoping things continue to stay stable as the weeks progress.
