Hello Beautiful People,
As Andre and I count down the days until we get to welcome Baby Alien into our world there are so many things we are doing to ensure that we are able, empowered and prepared. While there are material items we know help make the transition into mamahood and first time parenthood easier, both of us feel that the best possible thing we can provide for our little one and myself is time to bond, recover and transition into our life as Alien's chosen family. One of the ways we hope to be able to do this is by asking our friends and family to contribute to this Take12 inspired maternity registry.
I recently, at 10weeks pregnant, found myself interviewing for my dream job. A toddler teacher at a Head Start Early Learning Center that is attached to a Charter school that serves predominantly pregnant and parenting teens from underserved communities. The school affords these students the opportunity to earn their diploma while having the peace of mind that their children are down the hall receiving a high quality early childhood education. This job not only fulfills my passion for ECE, but it also allows me to connect with teen parents and their families. I knew instantly it was the perfect fit and I was ecstatic to receive their offer to become a lead teacher, however since I will not have been an employee for a year at the time of my birth, I do not qualify for FMLA (our organizations version of paid leave). While the standard leave for my job is 6 weeks unpaid, I spoke with my supervisor early on and expressed my anxiety about having to come back to work so soon and requested that if it is plausible for the center, that I would ideally like to take 12 weeks and to my surprise, she graciously accepted.
That is where your help comes in. Andre and I have been saving to be able to cover our monthly bills and expenses as we anticipate living on one income for 6weeks to 3 months, but any contribution would be so greatly appreciated and would go towards me being able to actually take additional weeks of leave, a valuable opportunity that every family deserves and hopefully one day will become the minimal standard.
