ART (achieving resilience together) House sprang directly out of the Ferguson Rebellion. Currently five activists are living together and doing community work.
The housing cooperative provides activists affordable living so they can focus fully on the work they are called to do.
Six times a month Art House opens its doors and provides free food to the neighborhood and surrounding community. More than 150 families monthly are provided with bread, eggs and fresh produce.
Art House is a haven for neighborhood kids to explore, create and plant. Our programming for children serves well over 20 children a week and provides them opportunities to make art, read and discuss their lives.
THE SITUATION. With one year to pay off the house, Art House is facing a financial obstacle. With two refrigerators, a freezer and some residents using electric heaters our electric use spiked 75% from last year. This has resulted in an unexpected large electric bill. We had a $483 payment agreement with Ameren. Ameren negated our payment because we were three days late scraping together the last $83. Now Ameren is demanding the entire bill of $1850 be paid by May. 5 or they will shut our electricity off.
Help us get through this hump. We are putting safeguards in place so this doesn't happen again but without your help we might have to close our doors. We are so close to being self-sufficient as the house will be paid off next year. We are asking for $2500 which will be used to pay off the utility bill and provide us with a cushion for emergencies.
