David Nsereko is a hardworking husband and father of three school children. Starting out selling sodas, he and his wife, Jane, worked and saved for years to buy a car to operate a taxi service in his hometown, Kampala, Uganda. His taxi (his only livelihood and the family's savings) were stolen.
David has been able to secure a job as a freelance driver for a car service, but makes only a fraction of the money paid to the company for his work (for workdays that can be 16 hours a day) to pay school fees for their children to give them a better future.
David is an excellent driver, with 20 years experience, able to find shortcuts around the worst traffic jams and still has many loyal clients who would love to hire him again.
While he needs 35 million Ugandan Shillings (equivalent to $10,000 US) to replace his taxi and get insurance to re-start the business, he and Jane, who sells charcoal, have so far managed to save 3,850,000 UGX (equivalent to $1,100). They have tried going to a bank for a small business loan despite the high interest rates, but the bank cannot give them a loan because they do not have secure jobs or stable income. As such David is left with one option, family and friends!
He would be the first employee of his transport business, and hopes that a few years down the road he would be able to provide employment to more drivers.
