Started by: United Human Services Center - Chicago, IL
United Human Services Center (UHSC) needs your help to farm the city of Chicago! Farming is not an easy job and it is even more difficult as a not-for-profit organization. That’s why UHSC has initiated UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB (UYFC), an urban farm serving the New City, Back of the Yards, & Englewood neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago. We will use the money to make the urban farm the main funding source for an ambitious set of programs revolving around human services, urban agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
We want to secure the future of UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB. By investing in the UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB you will be investing in the health of our urban environments and in the future of the UHSC community. Please help with a contribution and join UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB grow!
Currently, UHSC collaborates with two other organizations Chicago's Park District and the University of Illinois-Extension College of Agriculture to organize our youth development program called UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB (UYFC). This program brings together young students of the community and greater Chicago area during after-school hours and hosts youth conferences, workshops and urban gardening projects.
UHSC is initiating an urban agriculture project in efforts to educate youth on how to identify, cultivate and process organic agricultural products and to develop the associated entrepreneurial skills. Additionally, 100% the profits from the products produced at the urban farm will be directed to operating the farm, youth outreach, community programs, and other services provided by UHSC.
UHSC is actively occupying two urban lots located at 1901 & 1753 W 51st Street, Chicago, IL. To date, one of the urban lots has been confirmed with Greencorps Chicago. Each lot houses a community urban garden with raised beds, composting, mulch, and hoop houses. We even have a 40 foot shipping container which we will be transforming into the new UNITED YOUNG FARMERS CLUB headquarters!
The new headquarters will activate the neighborhood by engaging all those interested in planting, growing and processing vegetables, fruits and herbs to be marketed at local farmers market and to be distributed to local families-in-need through the UHSC Food Pantry Program. The urban farming initiative will be the primary component of the youth program.
UHSC has teamed up with local architects to develop a master plan of the two urban farm sites in Chicago and in another site in Kankakee. We are very excited to be able to share the master plan with the public, as soon as it is ready in early May.
