Make Your Own!
Started by: Jesse and Merissa Scheumann
UPDATE: We are now fully funded. We thank God for each of our donors, and for the prayers of many more! What's next? We will print just enough sets of cards to give to anyone who donated $50+ and to our Hebrew class (of 25 students!). We will welcome any and all feedback in the coming year, make any revisions needed, obtain a copyright, and make the cards available for purchase (print and app versions) next summer!
If you want a set of cards now to use and to give us feedback for revisions before our public release next summer, we are still accepting donations of $50 until Sunday, Sept. 4th. We will invest all extra donations now into making any necessary revisions for the cards and into producing a Jonah picture book that will also release next summer.
--------------------------
Short version (of our story):
For the last 14 months, Merissa has been drawing ~3 hrs every day to create hand-drawn works of art for these Biblical Hebrew picture flashcards. In order to print and digitally publish high quality images that capture every detail, we have chosen BamBamGraphix, which specializes in fine art scanning. It will cost $1400 for 345 pictures, and we're asking for your support. A small gift of $10 could go a long way, and if you give $50 or more, we will be happy to send you your very own copy of the printed cards. Scroll to the bottom of the page for examples of finished cards (fronts and backs), and click "Show 11 more examples."
Long version:
These picture flashcards illustrate the 417 most common words in the Old Testament, everything needed to open up a Reader's Hebrew Bible. The pictures make the language come alive and truly enable someone to read Hebrew, thinking instantly of the referent without translating first.
This is our 3rd completely new edition of these flashcards. Just for this final edition, we have spent 14 months finalizing the vocabulary list, looking through dozens of occurrences for each word to determine which sense/verse to illustrate, editing an English flashcard companion, planning the composition of each image, drawing every picture on 9"x11" bristol board, and preparing the fronts and backs of each card through InDesign. We estimate we have spent at least 1200 hours on this set of cards.
The flashcards will be 2.25” x 2.75” and will contain no English. On one side is a picture illustration of the Hebrew word with a text box in a specific corner to signify the part of speech. We have been able to illustrate verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions. For most parts of speech, we have kept illustrations as simple and clear as possible. But for verbs, we have illustrated the most iconic, memorable usage to make the scene come alive, and the back contains a Hebrew phrase taken from the verse that we illustrated.
These flashcards are but one resource we plan to offer when we launch our business next summer. Our name will be something like (but not necessarily) "See Hebrew" with a tagline “Read it. See it. Know it.”
