Help us reduce night-time bicycle fatalities by putting lights on our children's bicycles. We've found an inexpensive solution to increase visibility of bicycles at the cost of $2.50 per bike.
By law all motor vehicles are required to have lights in order to be visible at night. Oddly the same is not true for bicycle manufacturers, which are only required to provide reflectors. As the sun sets early and our kids are out riding their bikes, it's important that they be visible to automobile traffic.
In our pilot program, we seek to provide a pair of LED lights for every bicycle at Santa Cruz High School (downtown location) at no cost to the student. The lights come with a battery and attach to the bicycle using a rubber strap.
Research shows that kids are more likely to use lights if they have them. By providing subsidized lights, we feel we can provide an extra level of protection and reduce the risk of an avoidable accident.
We are asking for support from the Santa Cruz community to make this happen. While any size donation is welcome, a donation of $25 will provide lights to ten kids.
