My brother Sam, a police officer, and his wife Leanne are wonderful parents to 3 small children. In February of this year, Leanne was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Four months later Sam began experiencing excruciating headaches and was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Leanne underwent major surgery on her neck to remove her thyroid and many lymph nodes in her neck. She still has radiation treatment later this summer and follow up care afterwords to ensure the cancer is removed.

After multiple trips to the ER, Sam has been advised that he needs to have major surgery to remove the tumor from his brain. Sam's job has graciously allowed him to work in a light duty capacity, but this prevents him from working any over time. There are many unknown expenses ahead for Sam as he prepares for surgery.

During these trying months, Sam has used up his vacation and available sick time. Police officers normally work overtime in order to make ends meet, but he has missed this as well. Then there's the bills. Insurance doesn't cover the co-payments for every visit, deductibles, co-insurance payments, travel to the hospital (over an hour each away), and extra child care.

Please consider how you can help this wonderful Christian family.

Latest Update

A quick update on Leanne - her recovery is continuing. She was able to participate in a 4 mile run in September, though at a slower pace. Keep her in prayer for October. On the 21st she is scheduled for radiation treatment to hopefully remove any last bits of cancer. In preparation of this, she will have to suspend her thyroid medication. Without her thyroid and medication, her body will begin do lose energy as it is depleted of hormones. (Left in this condition a few more weeks would lead to death - but in order to take the radiation treatment she has to be clear of the medication. What a thought!) After the radiation treatment Leanne will have to remain isolated until the radiation levels drop. This means at least a week of being isolated from her children and family. Sam has scheduled time off from work to be with Leanne during this time and family members will be coming to help as well. Sam's work has been extremely accommodating by giving him the time off.

Sam met with the neurosurgeons at UVA today and found that the tumor is likely leaking because it has gotten slightly smaller. His records are being transferred to his local neurosurgeon and they will likely schedule another MRI so they can continue to monitor the size. Keep up the prayers - there's a lot Dr's don't know about Pituitary Adenomas.

We do not have much but if you will or wish, we can help with some baby milk (not formula) and maybe watch kids for a couple of hours for free.
