Friends and Family:

We all know Michael as the 6’4” handsome, muscular, strong, healthy, happy, fun loving and kind guy who cares deeply about his family and friends. He would do anything for any one of us without us ever asking. Now Michael needs our help. Many of you have asked for updates on Michael and how you could help. He is thankful for your prayers, visits, phone calls and thoughtful support. A fundraising site has been set up to help with the medical expenses from this unforeseen illness. Plumfund.com. Please share this post to spread the word about Michael Connell’s Medical Expense Fund.

On May 16th, Michael checked into St Vincent’s Hospital vomiting with severe stomach pain. He was diagnosed with Acute Pancreatitis. Being unique as he is in many ways, he is also out of the ordinary, because the doctors have not been able to pinpoint the cause of his condition. He doesn’t seem to have any of the common causes that would result in acute pancreatitis. And, in addition, he is now diabetic, insulin dependent. Michael spent ten days in the hospital the first time, and then was sent home for a few days to find out that he was let go too soon. In the days following, his pain level grew unbearably and after an emergency visit with a doctor and a second CT scan, was readmitted to the hospital for another week. After several CT scans and Medical Specialists the cause of his illness remains to be determined by more medical procedures. Michael is home now with added complications from his illness, still dealing with high levels of pain, fatigue and lack of appetite every day. In fact, he has been 90% bedridden with occasional walks. The prognosis is that it may take two to three months for this critical stage to subside, after which he will need to regain his strength to be able to work again. Bonnie and John (Mom & Dad) have come to stay with Michael to take care of him, as he is unable to function on his own or be left alone.

Difficulties never come at a good time, but this in particular is bad timing. Michael recently left his job with the winery in Seattle and was planning to spend the summer doing what he loves to do best, climbing and cutting trees to help out his friends. It’s very impressive to watch him climb way up high with his chain saw in tow and then cut and drop the tree limbs perfectly where he wants them to fall. If you have ever hired him to work for you, you know there is no one better than Michael for the job. This is just one side of Michael and everyone knows him for something different since he’s a man of many talents and gifts. His willingness to lend a helping hand when you need a strong person, his amazing wine cellars that he meticulously crafts and installs, his ability to help in household repairs and improvements, his willingness to share his multiple tools and gadgets or just share a great bottle of wine and an amazing dinner, is what we all know and love about Michael.

It is time now for us as his friends and family to step up and help Michael, as we all know he would do the same for us. Please continue to keep Michael in your prayers and donate what you can to help defray the mounting costs of his medical expenses. All funds received through Plumfund.com will go directly towards these expenses that continue to grow as he fights to combat this illness that has immobilized him for now.

Pay it forward! Life has many surprises for all of us, but together we will stand united and we will take care of each other.

Latest Update

Drastic times call for drastic measures. After many months of waiting and trying alternative methods of draining the cyst, the only alternative is surgery. Although we try to avoid surgery, I'm actually excited for progress. I check in for surgery on Tuesday the procedure will be a 5 in. incision in the upper center abdomen to physically remove the cyst mass. It's expected to take about three hours and a 2-night stay at Portland Providence Hospital. It will be slow healing after the surgery but on the road back to recovery. I'm excited be making progress. It has been a long, challenging and debilitating experience seeing the physical changes my body has gone through. I have lost 45 lbs and all muscle definition. As someone who used to work out daily, either at the gym or doing extreme sports or climbing trees with a chain saw; to say it hasn’t been easy to sit around for months is an understatement. It has been the worst time of

I'm happy to report that Michael is out of surgery now. The doctors said the procedure was a success but it will take time for the cyst to desolve. There was some bleeding that needs to be monitored for a few days. Then he goes home to heal. Keep the prayers coming. ~lucy

I thought it’s time for another update. My health is as good as can be expected. Blood sugars remain a challenge, the pain is manageable and “the bastard” pancreatic pseudo-cyst hasn’t changed, still 10”x6”x4” weighing approx. 7 lbs. Twice now the doctors have tried to drain it using a technique called Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). Both times they put me under, went in and found that the cyst core is still a solid mass that hasn’t liquefied so no joy. Surgery is always a last option, but we are so there. Tomorrow I go under the knife to finally drain this cyst and get on with life. The procedure is expected to be 4 hours in surgery with a 3-4 day recovery in the hospital, then 2-4 months for cyst to completely be absorbed by the body. This hopefully is the beginning of the end to something that started like a bad dream and has become a nightmare. This is short and sweet as I'm getting ready for my big day tomorrow. Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers.

Part 2 of 2 Another all nighter spent back in ER waiting room to be admitted back in the hospital Sunday morning. No food or liquids for the next three days and the time has come for the big event. The draining of the “bastard cyst” scheduled to take place today, only to get bad news again; it can’t happen after all. Long story short is that there isn’t anything to drain. The interior of the cyst is still too firm and another 4 weeks of waiting to see if it liquifies so the procedure can happen and the cyst drained. Michael is frustrated, sick and tired of being sick and tired. Although not giving up hope that this too will pass. Thank you all for your prayers and continued support. Lucy

Hi Friends, Michael was released from the hospital today after another 4 day stay. New complications continue to plague an already delicate condition. Another trip to the ER Saturday morning with extreme pain, much like the first episode back in May when this whole saga began. He was hoping never to have to experience that level of pain again in this lifetime, but unfortunately, that was not to be. Once again, back on the pain meds, IV and laying around in a hospital bed. The “bastard" had moved and was blocking the stomach exit so that everything he had eaten the previous days was sitting there with no place to go. The immediate fix was to pump the stomach to relieve the pressure and no food or liquids until the highly anticipated draining of the cyst event that was scheduled for the following Tuesday. He was sent back home with strict instructions to return if there was any pucking and shortly after getting home there was more of that. Part 1 of 2.

From Michael: As it has been brought to my attention I am not updating my condition often enough, I promised to get this out tonight. Last Friday my GI Doc informed me of yet more complications to my health situation. Fluid is leaking from my pancreas directly into my abdomen due to a damaged valve leading out of the pancreas. Step one: today I went in the hospital for a diagnostic parenthesis, in other words they numb you and stick a big needle in your side straight into the abdomen to drain fluid. 4 liters and almost 9 pounds later my pregnant like belly shrank half way back to normal size. Next procedure, step two: drain the melon sized cyst in the pancreas and slap a stint in the pancreatic valve so it can properly drain. Step three: tighten a few bolts, get a much needed detailing / polish and I'll be good as new. If only it were that easy.

Hello friends and family, I wish I could report it was a good week for me but not much has changed except for the size of the cyst in my belly, aka "the bastard". The pain and discomfort in my belly continues to grow. My days are long and uncomfortable as I await my next CT scan. My hope is that we can move my next appointment up to the first part of this week, hopefully the cyst has matured and they can proceed as planned. I am ready to be feeling better. Thank you all for the well wishes and generous support. MC

Home from my third hospital vacation. My room was big enough for a party...that's right, not partying these days. The good news is my team of doctors have a game plan in place. Taking blood thinners for the two blood clots. Going in twice a week for testing my INR which is the coagulation measure of my blood. Next CT scan on 7/10 to determine if the pseudo cyst has matured enough to be extracted. If so, the procedure will be scheduled at that time. Felt good for the first 24 hrs being home; then later today I had less energy...but good to be home. MC

Thursday afternoon 6/25/15 following the CT scan this morning, Michael is headed back to the hospital with more complications. Another pocket of fluid and an embolism in the lungs were found. Please pray for relief from the intense pain he suffers and for answers so that his doctors can begin treatment. He is at St. Vincent's Hospital in Beaverton. lw
