On August 24, 2016, feminist theologian and scholar Rosemary Radford Ruether suffered a significant stroke.

While Rosemary has made progress, her doctors and therefore Medicare feel it is insufficient to warrant continued physical, speech and occupational therapies. We disagree. The first year of a stroke demands ongoing therapies in order to truly assess a clear diagnosis. To what degree Rosemary will recover from her stroke is uncertain but at the minimum ongoing therapies will prove beneficial towards her overall quality of life.

To that end we have initiated this Plumfund page to assist in the cost of Rosemary’s ongoing therapies.

If you have benefited from Rosemary’s scholarship, friendship or mentorship this is a tangible way to give back to a woman whose life has been dedicated to the advancement of others—especially to women.

In advance we thank you for your monetary gift and concern for such a powerful legend of our time. Please continue to keep Rosemary in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward.

Latest Update

Greetings. We give thanks to all Rosemary’s dear friends, colleges and well wishers for their continuing love and support. Rosemary continues to get stronger and more physically active. Although her right arm remains unusable, she is able to transfer some weight on her right leg and can now stand and take small steps if supported on her right side by a physical therapist. Wheel chair transfers have become much easier and allows her to travel in a car without the need for a wheel chair van. The wonderful gifts of colored markers and coloring books have helped Rosemary develop the use of her left hand for painting and drawing. However, with the loss of her voice, her ability to communicate effectively is not progressing. We have located a program that we feel can help her, but we will have to pay for it out of pocket. We are appealing for your help in overcoming this hurdle and appreciate any monetary support you can share. Peace and love, The Ruether Family

We would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support for Rosemary. It has been extraordinary and heart warming. While her challenges continue to be large, we wanted to give you an update on her progress. Physical Therapy as well as everyone that comes to spend time with Rosemary has been key to her slow but sure improvement. A team of Pilgrims and friends take her for walks in her wheelchair, sit with her and read to her. Although the paralysis on the right side of her body has not changed much, she continues to adapt and find ways to move forward. Her ability to be transferred from a wheel chair to a bed by standing with assistance has been a wonderful advancement. Her oral eating has increased enough to give us hope that someday she might get off the feeding tube. We wish everyone well, the Ruether family.
