Tuesday afternoon one of my observant friends/staff members noticed our miniature horse Willie G was looking rather lethargic in his paddock at lunch time.
By Tuesday late afternoon he was quite colicky, rolling often, and I called my vet at 6pm that evening. She tubed him and gave him some fluids and painkiller. Wednesday morning came and after giving him more pain meds though the night myself, he was needing more attention and hydration from the vet. He started to look a bit happier Wednesday afternoon and I thought we were going in the right direction. He had a tiny bit of water, had a bit of manure come out of him and seemed more interested in eating, although was starting to look wider. Our vet decided to give him more hydration and painkillers. About an hour after the vet left for the third time he started getting really huffy and uncomfortable. :(.
We ended up having my vet come again around midnight on Wednesday to do an assessment. After 1.5 days exhausting days of trying to move his impaction through him on the farm, she said he was declining quickly and we should make a decision about surgery/euthanasia now. After a quick discussion with my husband and some dear friends, we decided to go for the surgery. Although things looked dismal, we had a feeling surgery would work for him!
Jonathan and one of our kind friends trailered poor Willie G up to Nanaimo at 1:30am on Thursday. He had a successful surgery to remove a large intestinal blockage. We are very lucky his intestines didn't die, and he didn't have a twist. He is looking bright, has had a few manures since surgery and is eating a bit of hay. His heart rate has gone down to near normal range and we are hoping we will get to go pick him up on Monday!
I have had some really generous and kind friends help with this emergency in so many ways. My hope with this fundraising is that I can help spread the financial load, as I have already had other friends ask how they can contribute. :) Any donation large or small helps with the huge bills! Thank you so much in advance for helping save Skye's little Willie G!!! <3
New news:
Saturday: We picked Willie G up in the trailer today! He is feeling tired, but happy to be home. He has a long recovery ahead.
Sunday: Willie is exhausted but eating, drinking, and doing all the normal horsey things. I was happy to hear a nicker today when I went to check on him! Jonathan set up a security camera in Willie's stall so I can check on him anytime!
Monday: Willie is much more peppy today! I was so happy to hear a whinny from him when I went to feed first thing in the morning ! <3
